Should all the Irish start to shop in the North?

Why the outcry against those going to the North to do their weekly/Christmas shopping? Its cheaper.
Nobody complained when the Northerners went South for their petrol and diesel.
Its good for the Good Friday Agreement - ain't it?
Additional Details
The Republic's Government is asking their people not to shop up North. Please take account that "English" or other International chain stores take their profits out of Ireland(North and South).

the only cries that we are hearing is from the greedy retailers that have been profiteering for years, government ministers on massive salary's looking out once again for the interest groups and not the ordinary folks who are struggling to keep afloat, don't listen to them, do what you have to do to save a buck, **** them, they have been screwing us for years

Christine
No one is stopping anyone going to the north for their shopping, I read in the paper today Brian Cowen knows that more and more people will be heading up, causing loss of jobs here, and lower revenue in VAT, but he said he'll not do anything to stop it, and from what I can see by putting up the VAT to 21.5% he's actually encouraging it, and that was before the UK dropped their rate from 17.5% to 15%.

Dublin city council upping the rates for the already beleaguered shop keepers of Dublin is yet another example of short term budgeting to longer term detriment.

As for the shop keepers, what really annoys me is the rate of exchange shown clearly on the items. Sterling has fallen a lot recently, but the rate on is based on the exchange rate from 2001. €1 is 84p, but we're being charged €1 to 70p. I know they say the overheads are more expensive (staff wages) and delivery charges (but strangely not for the shops up North) and lower VAT rate, but as from yesterday it wasn't' that low.

I know every single shop in Dublin seem to have a sale on at the min, but why don't they just get the exchange correct, give us real value for money, and stop the rip off cartel, and then of course I'll shop in the city. But, you never know, maybe the UK owners of the majority of shops in town might actually realised their additional profit margin days in ireland are over, and start treating us with a bit of respect.

And before I finish my rant, I just like to say the people I really feel sorry for at those Ulster counties not in the North, like Monaghan, Cavan and Donegal, they will be ghost towns unless this government investigate the idea of 'beyond budgeting' and give us all a break, and stimulate the economy, not shrink it further.

Priscilla Duck
Is there an outcry? I think the only people complaining are the shopkeepers in the Republic, and that's hardly surprising now, is it? Maybe if they tried dropping their profit margins and sold their goods at a price that reflected the cheaper imports they're availing of at the moment they'd manage to stop the exodus. I don't think 'all of the Irish' will start hopping over the border any time soon, it's a bit far for those of us in the deep south and we'd have to be buying a hell of a lot to make back the travel costs.

And I don't see the relevance of the Good Friday Agreement on this one, I'm afraid.

joanne o
sure why not, if you aren't too far away!

I'm from the north myself. It's unreal how many dublin yokes i see around nowadays.

But I'll tell ye's one thing, whoever took the last wii game I'll be looking for you! lol

People from the Republic used to shop in Northern Ireland when it was cheaper, before the cost of living got so high in Britain.

I don't actually blame anyone for travelling there for shopping, it's only reasonable that many would.

And I do think also that it will force the Irish government to take action against the big retailers that have been creaming profits for the past number of years. If Tesco, Dunnes, Lidl, Superquinn, etc were forced to reduce their prices, most Irish would shop in the Republic. What would really help would be if the government were to stop VAT until Christmas ... not that that's likely to happen, but at 21%, such a reduction would make shopping in the Republic much more attractive.

lil miss badass
because the country is already in a recession and if retailers arnt doing business then they become forced to shut down thus letting staff go which increases the number of unemployed and and worsens the financial economy. we are not calling for people to stop shopping in the north hell they have the right idea why shop down south when things are cheaper up north. instead we are calling for the government to drop the prices and taxes just like brittan did so there is no need to travel north to shop and shoppers put the money back into the economy and aid our struggle

-Mr Z-
Go where it is cheaper I say!

Why When How
hope some rip off shops go bust. We are so ripped off it's a disgrace!!

Gemma
Yeh you're money goes further in the North, but God there is soo many Southerners up here that i can hardly move and the traffic is horrific

I say do what you feel you want to do and hey if its cheaper...
