It depends what you mean by famous and from who's perspective.
GAA sports (football and hurling) are hugely famous within Ireland but as they're Irish sports they couldn't be said to be famous from an outsiders point of few. I doubt many people outside Ireland would know what Hurley is?
From outside as well as in Ireland is fairly famous for our boxers, horse racing and possibly rugby (as these are all sports we have moderate success in or punch well above our weight).
If you were to ask who Ireland's most famous sports person was/is I'd probably have to go for the runner Sonia O'Sullivan. She was with out question the best clean distance runner of her era.

It's either hurling or gaelic football. Both have a great amount of supporters.
And to Denise...gaelic football is the real football! :]

Gaelic and hurling are both very popular in Ireland. They are Irish sports, run by the GAA. Personally, I have no interest in either and I prefer Rugby. Ireland has been doing great in the 6 nations this year.

gaelic football..it's like real football but they pick up the ball..not to be confused with Rugby..that's another ball entierly..

I think it has to be hurling.

Both Gaelic and Hurley are played throughout the country but without a shadow of a doubt Gaelic is the most popular sport!

RUGBY!
and hockey!
In my school anyway. There are lots of 'rugby schools' in the Leinster area.
Irish sports like Gaelic football and hurling are also pretty common.
I also love horse-riding. Obviously not everyone does it but we have a great reputation here for equestrian sports/breeding
