Ireland is the third largest island in Europe. The island is divided into two separate countries: The Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland which is part of the United Kingdom.

The Republic of Ireland has a population of approximately 4 million people. The Irish are friendly, love to chat and have a good sense of humour. The pace of life is slower than many northern European countries.

Ireland has a rich cultural heritage with many castles and great houses. There is a strong tradition for Irish music and the country has produced many fine writers.

It rains a lot, which is why it is called the emerald isle, the climate is fairly mild with little snowfall. The countryside is stunning with an amazing coastline of rugged cliffs, sandy, often deserted beaches, There are rolling hills, peat bogs, mountains, lakes and many of the houses are painted bright colours which adds to the charm of most villages and towns.

I have included some websites with lots of great pictures to give you a feel for the country.

Today it's cold and damp, with showers and occasional sun. So you need rainproof winter clothes.

On Monday morning the radio was ringing out with frost and black ice warnings, and indeed motorists were taking it very slowly on the roads. I had to travel from my house in Limerick to the town of Thurles in Tipperary, which took me two and a half hours on the main roads going very slowly (between 40 and 60 miles an hour in most places), but coming back it just took 90 minutes as most of the frost had melted away in the sun.

The weather is a major topic of conversation in the country.

English is spoken here, but it's not always the same English - or indeed the same Hiberno-English. Parts of the west have an English that is still very much peppered by literal translations from the Irish language. And the dialect/accent changes every 20 miles or so.

Don't expect the Ireland of the The Quiet Man. That's long gone!

you seem like you have a very romantic idea of ireland! At the moment it's FREEZING! It's like most other countries really only everything costs three times as much! In recent years we have all become very rich, but now there's like a recession or something. I don't know weather you are talking about the republic or the north though! The republic is "real" ireland, the north a part of the uk.
