England took over Ireland duriing the Norman invasion in the year 1169

In the 1500's England decided to stake their stronghold on Ireland by planting colonies (Basically throwing the Irish off their land) During this alot of Irish were tortured and killed and woman raped. The Irish were treated very badly and were left with near to nothing and had to pay high rent on what they had. In 1844 -1845 Ireland experienced the famine where over 1miliion died and another million emigrated abroad

Over the years the Irish fought many wars and battles with the English trying to get their Land and Country back all unsuccessful

The most famous Battle of recent times would be the Easter rising in 1916 when the Irish took over all the main spots around dublin on Easter Monday. However by Easter Thursday the Battle was ove and all the Irish Leaders were rounded up and killed.

However this sparked off a rejuvenation in the Irish and the IRA were formed. The IRA used hit and run tactics against the English under the famous leader Michael Collins who there is a film about. Michael Collins also managed to get a spy ring in the English going and was very successful

In Decmber 1922 Ireland became a Free State and would be made up of 26 of the 32 counties while the remaining 6 would remain under British rule as it still remains under British rule called "Northern Ireland" The 6 counties in the north of Ireland was Englands strongest hold and most powerful unionists(people who wish to remain with United Kingdom) were and they had made it clear theey would rebel against any treaty where the Irish were given back control of their land

The Irish Free State would remain in the British coomonwealth until 1949 when the Republic of Ireland was formed gaining complete Independence

Northern Ireland is still under British Rule and altho in recent times there has been peace Dissident Republicans have been looking to continue the fight for Independence mainly the Real IRA who are a break away group of the Provisional IRA who were founded in the 1960's to fight for a United Ireland

The IRA have a bad name from the Real IRA and Provisional IRA because they carried out terrorist style attacks killing English people and became very unpopular even with the Irish people

The original IRA from 1916-1922 were popular amongst the Irish as they took the fight to the English Army
