The Irish?

What contribution did the Irish Free State give to the Irish people between 1922 – 1932?

NB:
I’m not a student
I’m 32 not a teenager
I don’t go to college
I’m not looking for exam answers
I AM Irish.
I’m just interested in what other people think on this question.

Not waving but drowning
Irish Free State granted dominion status, with defence safeguards, to 26 counties of the south and west of Ireland.

Abolishment of the oath to the crown (England) and removing the governor-general.

After nearly 800 years of oppression by our neighbours we painstakingly reclaimed what was ours, it cost a lot of lives, pitched brother against brother, but those two things were the foundation on which we built our identity, defence of our land and kicking out of the gov-general of England therefore, finally, cleansing ourselves of outside rule.

From 1932 - 48:
The constitution of 1937 established a virtual republic and independence in international affairs was confirmed by neutrality during the Second World War.

A republic was finally declared by the coalition government at a press conference in Ottawa in September 1948

I don't really understand your question. What do you mean by 'contribution'? I'm not getting argumentative here, it's just that the Free State was the name of the entity that was to become the Republic (in 1937, not '32). Do you mean what contribution did the governments and politicans that ran the Free State make? Or just that of Cosgrave and Cumann na nGaedheal who were in power until 1932? If so, they followed what Michael Collins called 'the freedom to achieve freedom', ie the genesis of an autonomous nation whose ultimate goal was the end of Dominion status and the establishment of a Republic. Aside from any other specific policies (fiscal, economic, social etc) they might have had, that alone was a fairly hefty achievement.

Well, it provided the starting point for the country we have developed into today. We are strong and capable, educated and forward-looking, and no longer the folk who doff their caps to their "betters". In fact, we are all "betters" ourselves now. Up there with the best and brightest.
