Hi there,
As mentioned its a variation of the more common name Doherty, check out the following site for the coat of arms and details of the first immigrants with this surname to The U.S and Canada;
http://www.houseofnames.com/xq/asp.fc/qx/dockery-family-crest.htm
It originates from Inishowen in County Donegal in the north west of Ireland, they were a very important family in these parts and held a family seat in Donegal (basically an old form of parliment/government. It tells you everything in the above link, V.interesting. |

It's a variation of Doherty (Docherty, Dochartaigh etc...). A lot of different spellings of this surname have arisen because many Irish emigrated to the US during the famine, not knowing how to read or write. Therefore, when it came to giving their name to US officials, the spelling was always the best guess of the US officials. Dockery, I am assuming arose from this situation. The name is popular in the North West of Ireland, specifically Donegal. It comes from the Irish word "Dochar", meaning damage. It is believed the Doherty clan are descended from Niall of the Nine Hostages, who took St. Patrick to Ireland. |

It is from Ireland, West Ireland mostly. I have a few friends called Doc or Doherty. If you check old Church Records in Ireland,
http://secretireland.blogspot.com/2008/06/genealogy-offaly-midlands-roots.html
Or the Genealogy Office in Dublin, and find out exactly where you Ancestors came from, then you should be able to track down your roots... |
