The republic of ireland vs. northern ireland?

I was talking to my brother a little while ago, and we were talking about the trip we are taking to Ireland in July. I know it's far away, but he just happened to mention that you can't wear certain colors in the Republic of Ireland and you can't wear certain colors in Northern Ireland. I know there's obviously problems between the two, but I've never heard the thing about clothing before. Does anyone know if that's actually true and, if so, what colors are unable to be worn in the Republic of Ireland (I'll be going to Dublin)?

Someone's been pulling your leg.

I live in Donegal and shop often in Northern Ireland and nobody cares what colour you wear.Least of all in Dublin.

It's not true. And the problems were never between the republic and Northern Ireland, they were between groups within Northen Ireland.

Not true. Not true anymore, I should say.

The Questioner
That is a Fairy tale. Enjoy your visit to Ireland.

It's not true. In Northern Ireland it's often suggested that you don't wear anything that could be taken as a sign of support for either side (e.g. don't wear a Union Jack), but I don't know how true that is these days and even if it is true for the North you shouldn't have any problem with your clothing choices in the Republic.

greenorlagh
That's just plain silly. But it is best that you aren't running around in a Celtic or Rangers football (soccer) shirt or maybe a GAA county shirt as some may take exception.

Sean
That's quite funny actually.

In the South, it'll be all good. In the North, things aren't as bad as they were but, if you want to be on the safe side, just wear casual clothes. It's nothin to get worked up over and I doubt you'll be goin down the Falls or the Shankill anyway, Just might be better not to wear anythin that might show a "side".

By the way, if you are buyin a football shirt when you're over here, buy an Irish one :)

you can wear anything in the south just don't wear something with a big union jack on it will ya? i'm from cork and i was up in Antrim up the north in the summer and i did wear GAA t-shirts and i wore my people's republic of cork t-shirt and nobody said anything and there were union jacks flying everywhere. A group of my friends were shouted at and a group of lads did try to pick a fight though. In Dublin though you can wear whatever you want.

It's Outrageous!
