If you're going to the UK, it would be helpful if you go somewhere you already have family or friends, as exciting as it is moving to a new country it can be difficult settling in & getting to know people, particularly if you're looking for work.
Make sure you apply for the European Health Insurance Card before you go, so you're covered if anything happens before you're entitled to treatment under the NHS - no one will deny you treatment in an emergency but it could come in handy
You'll also need to apply for a National Insurance Number (the UK equivalent of the PPS)

Edit: I'd give the same advice, if you're going to the UK, try to go somewhere you already have friends or relatives. Try to make sure you've already secured a job before you go, there are loads of websites out there for you to look for work in the UK.
If you're the adventuring type & you're going to go any way, make sure you have your European Health Insurance sorted & speak to your local benefits office in Ireland to find out how you can sign on in the UK. Once you're in the UK try to sign up to temp agencies, they might only get you a few days work here & there but it's better then doing nothing and you might get a foot in the door temping.
If you're a University graduate, find out if your Uni has an alumni association and if there's chapters in the UK. If you are a Uni graduate, you also need to bear in mind when they talk about college in the UK they're not talking about University they're discussing further education institutions where they do A Levels & vocational courses. You need to describe yourself as a University graduate or graduating from Uni rather then college, it might seem like a relatively minor detail but it can make a huge difference to how you're perceived.

I moved to London in the late eighties and stayed for two years. While I had a blast both at work and socially back then, it would be hard for we to advise anyone of moving anywhere far away from their own social and family network in these economic times. The weakening pound is a reflection is of the economic strength of the country, and this not good. Also my brother, who lives and works there, told me just last week that things aren't so good in the U.K. We're all in this mess, my advice to you is watch the pound for a comeback, but meanwhile stay put. |

my parents did it 20 years ago and have been wanting to move back since. don't commit to anything like a course or anything impulsive, because then you will be stuck here forever, |

stay close to home because family come first, you never realise how much you need them until something soo bad and i mean SOO BAD happens, but if your serious don't move to London its full of crime !
Birmingham is quite nice, but i think down south is the best like Eastbourne Brighton, but the midlands are pretty coool too :D |

I moved from ireland to england for uni. My advice would be not to. The people are not as friendly and I get very homesick. I miss lots of the small things that you don't take into consideration. They don'y have tayto or kings crisps, club or c and c lemonade, and the dairymilk chocolate is different too. You have to think that some people won't take too kindly to your accent, I'm not saying everyone but personally I have met a few. There are a few nice places but be 100% sure before you move, I'm only at uni and personally I can't wait to get back home!
Good luck whatever you choose! |

Depends where you want to move to, whatever you do don't move to the Midlands, I live there and its horrible. A very high % of immigrants most illegal, drugs, gun crime etc.
Best place to move too is down south e.g Devon, Cornwall or Somerset. |

Before i start...I have reported you Babes....i don think there was any need for that!
I did the opposite, i moved from the midlands in the uk to Dublin, and it was the best thing i ever did!
Even tho the cost of living is slightly more expensive here in Ireland, the Quality of life is soo much better...and the people are so much friendly and nicer...
All city have crime...but I think Birmingham would be a bad to move to.....(my opinion!)
I have to agree, stay where you are..... |
