Time frame on Irish Economy bouncing back? |
How long do you think it will take for the Irish Economy to bounce back? I'm an Irish Citizen living in the U.S. currently, and I'd like to move to Ireland and plan to do so. But with the economy, and finding a job, I'd like to wait until the economy is stronger. The U.S. isn't much better either, though. |

I work in banking, so this is a question i come across quite regularly. I wish I could tell you when recovery will start, I'd be pretty rich if I could put a time on it. The best way to look at this is using tradition. Traditionally we (Ireland), fall about nine months behind the US in economic terms, so a good way to judge our recovery is by focusing on when the US takes an economic upturn. I was at a conference a few months ago, and it was pointed out that most economists only realise an economic upturn 6 months in, so use this as a measure. Once you hear of an economic upturn in the states, Ireland will shortly follow, due to the two being intrinsically linked. Going by the media outlook here, it is being suggested that we should see recovery by 2011, however, in my opinion things have not yet got as bad as they are going to get. Unfortunately most business are holding out until after Christmas before laying off staff or going out of business altogether. January/February will make thing clearer. |

The next two years are going to be difficult in Ireland. Stay where you are for the time being. |

Sshhhh! It's Podge and Rodge

Another few years hopefully.
Just enough time for the nouveau riche to have to get rid of their Bulgarian holiday homes and settle for 2 weeks in Ballybunion instead. |

I work in Ireland and supply the car manufacturers with electronic devices - so I would have first hand experience on how the economy is doing.
1) I would not return to Ireland until at least 2011, we need a minimum of at least 2 years to regain confidence in the market.
2) A good way to gauge the Irish economy, is to monitor the dollar against the euro. The better the exchange rate, the better the feel good factor is in Ireland.
3) If you are financially solvent, this would be the best time to buy property in Ireland, it's a buyers market.
Failing that, you could always return sooner, and chance your arm?? |

It isn't just Ireland, the economy is bad worldwide. There is more opportunity in the US frankly; I'd stay put. The time frame everyone is bandying about is 2010 or 2011. No one really knows. Hopefully we won't all tip into another Great Depression, although the signs are similar to those in 1929.
Scary times. |

I certainly agree with Orla C; there's no way of knowing the extent of the financial meltdown yet. Work with what you have; jobs will probably be easier to come by here in the U.S. than they will in Ireland, and you have to eat and keep a roof over your head. Of course, you can look for jobs in Ireland, and even apply for jobs online; but you can do that from here, rather than hoping to find a job once you're home in Ireland. |
