To Irish People Or People Living In The Republic!?

Hello,
I am Irish people, living in the UK, and in my life I have discovered, one thing is for sure, although my parents brought my family and meself to these shores in 1956 because life in Ireland was starving us to our demise, and on the premise of Better the devil you do know rather than the devil you don't know, my Father said " we will live in the UK for 5 years, and if our familt can't flourish, we will go home again to County Galway" When we got on a boat at Dublin, the lower deck was full of cattle and it wasn't difficult to be aware of this fact, sure 'twas a smell I had known since my early childhood, and my family still have cattle on the land in Ireland.
I thought, being 12 years old at the time of the 'Irish exudus in the 1950's that 5 years in the UK WOULD BE THE END OF US, well, the reverse is true, 'twas the making of us one and all. All those that could work, found work, and the Family home was large enough to accommodate us all with 1 room to spare. and in those 5 years we really did go from strength to even greater strength......
We even got a chance to vote for the politicians we wanted to take care of our needs, and providing we paid their taxes, they did just that, and A new Catholic church being built 150 yards from our own front door took care of our ecumenical needs, so we did what Our Da told us, and never mixed our religion with the politics of the day, and we never had to suffer the disasters that would arise from such a mix.
So, what I think is our FAMILY MADE A GOOD DECISION, and now in my advancing years I realise that I can still go home to Galway, to visit my family, and see what heppened to them, and make a simple comparison, with what has happened to me in particular, Ihave a new Bungalow to live in with my wife of 42 years, and a nice car to take us to wherever we want to be. and a bit of a bank balance. and most of my old folks at home, are still stuck with all we gave them when we came for our 5 probationary years in the UK, and it hasn't changed much for them. even the smell of the land is still the same, and I have a flower garden. I think I am a lot better off, and I am still very Irish, and have a lot of Irish friends here in the UK. I am retired now at the age of 62, fit and quite well, and so is my wife too, this is what I think, we made one great decision, and I will never regret it, My parents are gone now, as is one of my brothers, But the thinking my parents did, paid off, Bless them.........................Bye Tony M
