I'm thinking of spending my two week vacation in August in Ireland. I want to save as much as possible so I'd prefer to rent a bike to get around rather than bus and camp as much as possible. What is a realistic budget for seeing as much as possible while being as cheap as I can? This would include everything: accommodation, entrance fees, transportation, food, etc. I'd most likely spend most of my time in the southern half of the country.
I would bus it to a start-off-point and then bike around a specific route. The Ring of Kerry, West Cork and the Dingle peninsula come to mind, but if you want to take in a variety of terrain and a city and my opinion the most breathtaking landscape the “Doolough valley route” is best.
This takes in the West coast, the Doolough valley (the infamous famine walk and Irelands only fiord), the spectacular Connemara region of Galway and then the city of Galway (Ireland’s so-called home of the arts).
• Getting to start off point: train from Dublin to Galway. See train times below. http://www.irishrail.ie/your_journey/timetables.asp
• Cycle route: Galway city – Connemara region - Clifden – Leenane – Doolough – Louisburgh - Westport - Galway city.
For bike hire in Galway: http://www.bikehireireland.com/index.htm
Train fare: 40 euro open return Dublin to Galway
Mountain bike rental: less than 20 euro per day depending (you could alternatively buy a bike in Galway and resell it to the shop on return)
Camping equipment: less than 50 euro
Food: 5-10 euro per day from supermarkets. 15 - 20 euro eating out.
Hostel in Galway: 15- 20 euro per night
