check with the ferry company
but as of last year (June/July) there was no need for any form of documentation (except the ticket)

there is a treaty, dating back to the 1920's, which means citizens of the UK, Eire, Isle of man and The Channel Islands do not need to show passports to travel between those countries. however there was a proposal to revoke that treaty and require passports to be used in the near future. I haven't heard if it has been implemented as yet.

if you were flying you would need some form of Photo ID, as a requirement to air traffic/safety regulations.

In terms of documentation you perhaps you should get the equivalent of the medical certificate which guarantees you NHS medical treatment. In the UK if you carry a certificate it gurantees you medical cover elsewhere in Europe.

aside from that travel insurance may be a good idea.

Kczweracz—
UK - ROI = common travel area

British and Irish = driver's license o.k.

European Union = ID card o.k.

others = passport (may be visa)

Just walk across the border and you're in the UK!! No need to take a ferry.

Why When How

ah the most commonly asked question in this section, we we're due for it to be asked again :)

by ferry you will be fine, but I would advise you to bring some form of ID as you will be a foreigner!

Sshhhh! It's Podge and Rodge
If you're going by ferry you don't need a passport.

Hi smokeyeyes,

some of the answers here are very confusing, don't be minding them. You can 100% travel on the ferry without a passport once you/your bf is an irish national. I travel on the ferry quite a lot to and from Holyhead and tbh most of the time they don't even check ID, but if they do a valid photo ID will suffice, such as a drivers license like you say. (even flying to and from The U.K you don't need a passport, I also do this journey regularly and it does my nut in when people say you do need a passport, ya bloody well don't! so don't be minding some people!)

Anyway that's my lil rant over! don't worry about the id thing, have a ball and enjoy yourself!

as far as I know and I use the ferry at Rosslare quite often you only need a drivers license to get through but sometimes they only ask you if you are from outside the EU

EC
Yes it is. Are you taking the Stranaer ferry from Belfast or any of the Stenaline routes? If it is, I'm sure it's fine.
They don't even check it really... the police do occasional checks & you might need it at check in but that's about it.
A drive license should be enough
