Travelling to Ireland? |
I am going to be visiting Ireland in June and want some advice on picturesque, quaint places to visit (besides Dublin). Also do you recommend that we rent a car to sight see or should we take to train?
Should we go to Belfast?
Any advice will help : ) Additional Details Hi - I am from the US. I have heard Belfast is dangerous and has a lot of political tensions. I don't know if this is still the case. Sorry, I didn't mean to offend anyone. |

there are plenty of quaint little places near dublin in county wicklow but for the best scenery head to the west coast to counties donegal, sligo, mayo, galway, clare and kerry
Belfast is a big city not a huge amount of quaint things to see there.
my advice go to places like connemara, achill island, northwest donegal, west clare, dingle peninsula and the ring of kerry; that should keep you busy for at least 2 weeks
the train is good for connecting between the large towns and cities i.e. galway to dublin, cork to dublin, dublin to belfast etc, however i would recommend renting a car to reach places like achill, cliffs of moher, connemara etc
prepare yourself for very narrow and windy roads in the west of the country and lack of roadsigns, asking the locals for directions is half the fun!!!
enjoy your holiday |

rent a car. the public transport in Ireland is not to good, unless you want to go city to city by coach or train. -www.buseirann.ie
i have family living in a village in ireland- they have one bus a week
theres load to see, depends what you want to do. you have the delights of Dublin, or visit the "marble city"- Kilkenny, or visit the Ring of Kerry, or the Japanese Gardens near Kildare. the Aran islands, of the West Coast of Ireland, i could go on.
if you plan to rent a car in Dublin, but to drive to Northern Ireland, inform your car hire company, as you might not be covered to drive the car in Northern ireland. yes go to Belfast its a great city, or visit Londonderry / derry, the walls, still go around the city and of course you have the Gaints causeway near Portrush
what ever you decide to do, your have a great time, the people of ireland are friendly. |

Hi, I've just come back from Kinsale, which is just south of Cork. Really pretty harbour town, with LOADS of really good restaurants, shops and beautiful scenery. People were lovely too. I would rent a car if I were you, gives you more scope to get out and about, particularly if the weather's bad.
Hope you have a great trip, wherever you decide to go! |

Why shouldn't you go to Belfast?
I don't know where you are from, but remember Belfast is not in the Republic, it is in Northern Ireland, part of the UK, so if you are from outside the EU, you will have entered another nation and the legal currency there is the £, not the €.
EDIT - just read your edit. Belfast, and the whole of Northern Ireland, is putting its troubled political past behind it, and moving forward peacefully. Belfast is one of the UK's up and coming cities, and Northern Ireland is enjoying a spell of prosperity because of it. How can you not go to Northern Ireland and see the magnificent Giant's Causeway, one of the true wonders of the world? This honeycomb of coastal flood basalt is a sight to rival any other place of outstanding natural beauty. Go north of the border. Go south of the border, then cross the Irish Sea and come to the British mainland. You will love both countries and will be welcomed everywhere.
PS Ireland public transport isn't ideal. Trains are ok, Dublin buses suffer because of heavy traffic, though the new tunnel to the motorway has helped relieve this somewhat. |
