Visiting Ireland and Driving Dads car?
hello im a United States citizen and i have a full us drivers license im 17 im visiting ireland for 3 weeks because my dad lives here in CORK so i have allready figured out that i can drive with my american license question is what about insurance is it ok to drive my dads car with his insurance since im just visiting??
Thanks in advance
The legality of you driving here should be OK. Your father will have to name you on his policy for the duration of your visit, but as you are only 17, it will be expensive.
Your biggest concern will be that we drive on the left side of the road, the complete opposite to Continental Europe and USA. All the junctions and exits will be in reverse. Also the speed limits and distances are shown in kilometers and not miles.
It is also very likely that your fathers car will be manual gear shift , and that is very difficult for a novice driver to master in a few lessons.
Finally be very careful driving around Ireland, particularly on the minor roads in Cork, as it can be very scary even for the natives.
Enjoy your trip.

Your father will have to contact his insurance company to have you added on as a named driver on his policy for the duration of your stay.
The cost will depend on the cc engine of your fathers car. Because you are young it might be a bit expensive.

If you are 17, there will probably have to be extra money paid on your father's insurance, if you are a named driver.
If you don't have a full licence, you can forget about driving any car here - the police are now very strict with people driving on learner's permits without a fully licenced driver in the car with them.
Your best bet would be to send a scan of your driver's licence to your father's insurance company and ask them to see how to go about putting you down as a named driver on the policy. However, I think it will be very expensive, given your age.

It would be cheaper to taxi it around....
