You’re from Derry. Don't ye all have cute little accents back there?
Derry is the original name of your County. And if somebody wants to call it another name, I suppose they can. I wouldn’t get thick with somebody for saying it, like. What a persons says is really there own business, I suppose.
Even though, I never understood why they wanted to rename it that. It is a bit patronising don't you think?
Like do they call Cardiff Londoncardiff in Wales?
It sounds absurd.
It is called Derry on a lot of maps. Irish travel sites have it up as Derry.
Sky news has it up as the other name. And that will probably never change. It is just the way things are, I suppose?
It be a cold day in Hell, the day I call Derry by the other name.
I would not insult my bookshelf with a map with the other name.
I presume Derry is still on the map. I was talking to one of ye about two months ago in Cork and they told me there were in Derry a few days before.
Edit: Jez people, I said people can call it what they want. But you thumb me down because I call it Derry. What a sad politically correct world we live in. |

Derry is the Catholic name, Londonderry the Protestant. |
|

I should be doing something else
|
Well the rule of thumb is "Catholics say Derry and Protestants say Londonderry" but not so much nowadays, I know a lot of Protestants who call it Derry - It's two syllables shorter so why not.
I believe signs alternate between the two, the council uses both Derry and Londonderry on it's literature, and even newsreaders alternate between the two names so as not to show bias, but surely as this is your hometown you are bound to be aware of this, so slightly unsure as to the point of your question. |

Derry is still there. It's absolute rubbish that Derry is the 'Catholic' name and Londonderry the 'protestant'. It's called derry by all in the NW - Catholic and prod. After all when they sing the sash don't the orangemen sing 'It was worn at DERRY, Aughrim, Enniskillen and the Boyne...'
So, no, not wiped off the map at all. |

You obviously asked the question to somebody from a Unionist/Loyalist (Protestant) background and they were just being a smart Alec back to you. The non ignorant and polite thing to do would have been to agree with whatever you called it. |

I go to Derry/Londonderry every two weeks...so I'm a resident in Belfast and I know the answer to your question...you are a resident up north west...so you know the reason why.
Obvious crap attempt to start a whole new unionist/nationalist debate on the proper name of the maiden city... |

WeenerMan

I call it the Maiden City and that way you don't take sides as there are enough people engaged in that unsavoury discussion already. |
