It is a shambles plain and simple. It consists of a two-tiered structure. One tier is for public patients and it is inadequate beyond belief. For example, people with a suspected brain tumour might be told to wait six months for a scan. Those awaiting orthodontic treatment on the public list are waiting up to five years for consulation, never mind beginning treatment. The second tier for those lucky enough comparitively to have private health insurance is better but not compared to the Canadian, Swedish, Cuban (yes you heard me, surprisingly one of the better systems) or UK systems.

Our screening programs (the ones that havent been withdrawn like cervical cancer recently) such as breast cancer screening are not equitable and only availabe to certain groups in certain areas, and have been fraught with diagnostic problems and misdiagnoses of late. There is wide-spread ageism and stereotyping of ethnic groups across the board. The health service also has what you might call an over-loyalty to brand drugs (and certain companies) when pharmacies could be allowed access generic drugs that are far cheaper.

Our medical card system has recently been shook up by the emergency budget and as a result is now in far worse of a state, resulting in nationwide protests.

I could keep going and going, on the broken promises, the corruption, the poor health outcomes for diseases such as cystic fibrosis (one of the highest rates in Ireland worldwide, one of the lowest survival rates) and leukemia, but I'd depress myself and you too much.

It's shyte and it's getting shyter.
If you turn up at A&E they'll charge ya 100 euro. If you go to the doctor he'll charge ya around 60. God help you if you have to stay in hospital overnight. It'd be cheaper if you checked into Dromoland Castle for a week, they have spa's and jacuzzis and you won't get the MRSA.
We have a Health Minister, Mary Von Harney, who tried to stop the medical cards for over 70s. She's now rolling back on cervical cancer vaccines to save a measly 10 million and the HSE is a complete joke.
Apart from that Mrs Lincoln.........

What health care??? It is fine if you are rich, if not go in the corner and die. A visit to the doctor should be free and not €50 odd. No wonder people don't go cause it is either eat or go to the doctor. I can't believe they are only brining in free smear tests now.

I moved here from England and just getting my first look at the health system now the wife is pregnant. Have to say, while the staff seem fully competent, what I've seen of the buildings and equipment it's like something out of the 1950s

Public health care in Ireland is not good, most people who can afford it go private.

I'm in the Public Patient System ( Medical card) for the past 10 years, with an ongoing health problem.
The biggest problem I have is that I never get to see a Consultant or a senior registrar when I go for my follow up clinic visits. Because Beaumont Hospital is a teaching hospital, all I get is a student doctor who reads my notes and asks all the same stupid questions. The students spend 6 months in each dept. and by the next time my visit is due, I have another different student repeating all the same questions and, in my opinion, using me and my illness as an opportunity to pass his final exams.
I have been admitted to the wards on 3 occasions and can say that the hygiene in the bathrooms ( one for every 6 beds) is disgusting.
No wonder the place is contaminated with MRSA.

It's not that good,

its terrible if you go out to a.e section of the hospital emergency you could be waiting there several hours and even to seen be a doctor in that secton is very slow

the healthservice is underfunded along with everything else in ireland. the irish voted for fina fall (what ever way you spell it) FOR THE LAST 10 YEARS. YOU GOT WHAT YOU VOTED FOR. my girlfriend works in a hospital in dublin and she likes mary harney, why you ask, because she is actually making hard decisions that are for the benefit of the people of ireland. you can't have a specialist doctor at your local hospital. you have to have specialist centres. the amount of financial waste in the HSE is criminal it makes the NHS look like angels. you can't sack anybody as the unions will go crazy even if they kill people and they do.

no money has been invested in the health service full stop and it don't matter if your are private as the Matter private and co do not have A&E so when the fucke up they just phone an ambulance and they get taken to the public hospital.

last year the HSE moved offices and because the staff didn't want to catch a bus or drive to the new office (it was to hard to get to) then the hse paid over 250,000 euro for taxis to ferry them from the old office to the new on the demand of the unions.

you got what you wanted, you voted these people in and you all new that no money was going to the hospitals, roads, transport, etc and it did not matter has your house prices climbed and you had your holidays and cars. now all thats gone and there all moaning on about how hard things are. bit late now.
