You have to remember that the average salary in the Republic is 38,000 compared to northern irelands £28,000. Quite a difference in earnings, and taxation is diff too - so it's not 'greed' alone. |

Why When How

the shops in ROI rip us off because people do not complain. Oh they might complain on here or to their friends but they dont complain to the shop manager, the company, their TD, NCA and most importantly they don't avoid the shops. |
|

Please punctuate properly folks.

Sounds like you should start an Import/Export business! |

It might be cheaper but the quality of life in the North is still crap, the crime rate is through the roof there is no social development. Belfast council doesn't give a toss about a lot of the areas in the west. When business started to take off in Belfast and the North all the greedy fat bastards promised the world and delivered nothing back. The reason why the South is more expensive is because of the massive cash injection it got from all the massive global businesses that moved there people were on good wages compared to the North and so spending went up. we in the North our wages didn't increase so that kept the prices down.
Its all down to comparative cash flow. |

Sshhhh! It's Podge and Rodge
 |
It's greed - pure and simple, and as long as the Irish people supinely take it then things will never change.
We should have a general strike like they have in France every 5 minutes. People should take to the streets in protest but they'll probably stay at home and watch The Afternoon Show instead. |

I was in a Laura Ashley store in Derry yesterday where the £ price and the € price were displayed side by side on the price tag. A rug I was looking at was £250 and the euro price was €440.At the present exchange rate £250 should translate to €283 or thereabouts.I'd like to know why the punters in the south get charged an extra €157 for exactly the same item? The words rip and off come to mind. |

swings and roundabouts, for years you enjoyed cheaper petrol and goods with the punt and we used to flock to the border for cheaper goods, so unfortunately its ur governments fault for joining the euro
its the way it is |

You are right about the price difference, I have just come back from the UK, and was amazed at the prices..................but, I have a family member doing the same job as me, and I earn nearly 3euros an hour more than her, so I suppose it swings in roundabouts, and as one of the others poster's have said, I would like to support out local business as well. |

Whatever about the rest of it, anyone who needs their teeth done would be mad to go to a dentist in the South. Just about anywhere else is cheaper than Ireland. Once I needed a crown. The dentist in Dun Laoghaire quoted me 600 punts. I thought that far too expensive and said I could get it done in the North far cheaper. Instantly he was on the defensive, saying that it was the dental technicians who were responsible for the high prices. He left me alone for a min or two but when he returned the price had gone down to 400 punts. So I went for it. Shows you that it pays to check. |

I am not defending the price comparison between the RoI and NI, but you have to understand why the difference is so great.
The two dentists are probably working to a similar profit margin, but the comparison stops there. RoI man, has to pay higher costs for everything at his surgery, rent, insurance, rates, staff wages, equipment, utilities, VAT, RSI, income tax and many more hidden costs.
Then at the end of the trading year, I doubt if the RoI dentist will be any more wealthy than his NI counterpart.
It applies to all service industries in the RoI, fact is, it's just far more expensive to do business here. |

Southern Irelans is just ripping you off so they can have lots of holidays. Northern Ireland is honest and kind. Thats all. Same island and so just different people. |
|

Guaranteed Irish!!!

That's all very well to say but if you have a problem with something for example your teeth your going to have to return to the North. That's alot of hassle time energy and petrol.Same with ikea furniture.Speaking for myself I couldn't be bothered. We are in a recession I would much rather support our workers and businesses than boost trade up the North!!!! |
