What? Is Ireland really a part or not of the United Kingdom?

I was totally under the impression they were independent from England but maybe they are still part of the "kingdom". Please don't hurt me if I'm totally wayyy out of it and have got it all wrong.

england til i die
UK = great britain and northern ireland

great britain = england, scotland and wales

british isles = england, rebublic of ireland, northern ireland, scotland, wales, isle of man, scilly isles, channel islands and all other 1500 islands hanging around the edge (the british isles has nothing to do with government, countries or anything it is purely geographical)

Republic of ireland is governed completely seperatly to UK and is closer to europe than uk as they use the euro

choccy_002
Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom but the Irish Republic (Southern Ireland) is independent and has been since 1921.

nosdda
Only Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom. The rest of Ireland is a Republic.

It's complicated.

Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom. The Republic of Ireland is an entirely separate entity.

The history and whys and wherefores of this are all still subject to big debate and argument, especially in Northern Ireland itself.

casino man
eire is not part of the united kingdom.northern ireland is part of the united kingdom but not part of great britain.when we compete in the olympics we compete under the title of great britain&northern ireland.southern ireland [eire]is an independant country.

Ireland is the name given to the whole island to the west of Britain. It is divided into two parts,Southern Ireland or Eire, which is an independent republic and Northern Ireland or Ulster which is part of the United Kingdom .The full title is the United Kingdom Of Britain and Northern Ireland. The Queen is the sovereign of Northern Ireland along with England,Wales and Scotland and the smaller islands.Southern Ireland has a president.Northern Ireland is governed by the British parliament based in London although they have set up a regional assembly to deal with local issues. The capital of Northern Ireland is Belfast. The capital of Southern Ireland is Dublin.,where it's parliament or government is based.

Ireland is part of "The British Isles" ie The United Kingdom and The Republic of Ireland.

celtic_colieen
you've got it wrong..grrrr
My country became a republic in 1922 after talks with the British Govt due to our hardcore fighting for Independence since 1916.
We where only given 32 counties not the whole country which caused a divide among Irish brethren, which then caused a civil war.
The remaining 6 counties of Ireland are still a apart of the British common wealth. though give or take 20 yrs that could change...
The Republic of Eire is a Free nation, we are no longer oppressed by the British.

If you want to learn the full story I suggest you get the film Micheal Collins out on DVD, an excellent film based on the man who freed Ireland from tyranny and oppression...

Its not a Documentary and it even won several awards for its portrayal of the Irish heroes who gave their lives to give us the freedom we have today.

Liam Neeson, Julia Roberts and Aidan Quinn star in it, trust me, you will enjoy it...I love it!

Chucaigh ar la!

The Shadow
The Six Counties that make up the statelet of Northern Ireland are within the UK, but the other three Ulster counties plus the other 23 make up the Republic of Ireland. I'll not complicate it any further for you.
Incidentally the Isle of Man is not part of the UK.

Sam I Am
In the UK there is Scotland, Wales, England, and the small northern tip of Ireland call well Northern Ireland. But Ireland and the UK are 2 different countries.

jay jay
Northern Ireland also known as the six counties is a part of the UK. Southern Ireland ? Eire is independent.

creambunmum
Northern Ireland is part of the British Isles, but it is the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland!!!
No part of Ireland has ever been part of England - they are independent from each other!!!!!
However, Southern Ireland - Eire - is an independent country.

scottie
Ireland is part of "The British Isles" ie The United Kingdom and The Republic of Ireland geographically.

The republic of Ireland is an independent state. UK.....England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and wales.

no it's a republic

UK = England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
Southern Ireland (Eire) gained independence from British rule in 1922and is a self-governing republic.
Like the UK Eire is part of the EU and, unlike UK, uses the Euro as its currency.
The British Isles is a geographical term for the Islands around and including Britain but includes non-British islands such as the Isle of Man.
Sadly, these sort of distinctions are blurred or obscured by the similarity in nomenclature.
Some people really care about such things, the rest of us get out more!
