What are Ireland's quarantine laws for animals travelling from America?

Hello,

My fiance and I are possibly being relocated to Dublin for his work. I am wondering exactly what the laws are regarding bringing my cats in from America? I have looked it up, and on http://www.irishanimals.ie there was an article saying that there were no quarantine laws if we travelled in through Britain. However, I got a book about living abroad in Ireland that was published in 2005 and it says there *IS* a 6 month quarantine. Does anyone know the facts? Also, when/if my animals are in quarantine, am I allowed to visit them? Thanks.

Fly in the Ointment
A cat must be held for 6 weeks and fed only potatoes, it is then ready for Ireland.

I should be doing something else
From what I can see, provided the correct procedures are followed (microchipping, vaccinations etc) then no quarantine is required.

I have the right page and all open for you.

Good Luck

P.S Comment above Leprechauns are extinct.
We used them as food during the last Depression.

I understand that there was a reorganisation of the bodies responsible for immigration to the Republic of Ireland in 2005. It's possible the laws may have changed as well.

Your fiance's employer should take responsibility for ensuring that all the information you both need is available to you, since they are responsible for your relocation. But in any case, your best bet is to start with the Irish Embassy in Washington, since they will be able to give you all the necessary official advice and you'll know it's reliable as it's straight from the horse's mouth - http://www.embassyofireland.org/home/index.aspx?id=30782 . Other organisations can mislead as their information may be wrong or out of date. For all immigration and quarantine queries always start with the government of the country to which you are moving.

You have to have them micro-chipped with the UK/European chip and verify that their vaccinations etc... are up to date, bring them in thru England/UK, and there will be no quarantine. A friend did the same with her cats when she moved.

British Quarantine Rules

2. England's Relaxed Quarantine Rules - the Pet Travel Scheme

Some cats and dogs may be spared the standard 6 month's quarantine under the Pet Travel Scheme. To qualify, a pet coming from European Union countries must have been fitted with a microchip tag, had its blood tested at an approved laboratory and been vaccinated against rabies. Animals coming from nations outside the EU that are certified as totally free of rabies will also be able to qualify. Australia is a leading example of such a country.
Several years ago , the scheme was extended to cover pets coming to England from the US and Canada. People coming to England from the USA and Canada are able to bring their vaccinated pets without having to put them into six months quarantine.

In the UK and Europe most microchips and scanners comply with ISO Standards. The USA and Canada have different microchips. Owners of animals identified with non-ISO microchips may experience some difficulties in demonstrating that their animal has been micro-chipped. Such owners are advised to provide their own scanner.

There are many restrictions about manner of travel, acceptable ports of entry and countries to which the Scheme applies. The Defra website has full details. Defra is the UK's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

The Irish Department of Agriculture and Food has now made a decision that it will allow free movement of animals that have satisfied the English Pet Travel Rules from England. So, if you can produce documentation showing that your animal has passed the revised English pet standards, you can avoid quarantine for your animal.

Animals may now come into Ireland via ferry or air carrier. British Midland, Aerlingus, BA and possibly some other airlines provide this service. Check with them.

What are the British rules?

The Animal Health and Welfare Branch of the Department of Agriculture has placed the rules online at http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/quarantine/index.htm
You can also phone the English Pet Travel Scheme Help line at +44 20 7238 6951

Also note that the Pet Travel Scheme only applies to Cats and Dogs. Other pets travelling through the UK have a different set of rules and these, too, can be accessed at the link given above.
To date, hundreds of thousands of dogs and cats have entered England under the Scheme without the need for quarantine. The Scheme operates into England on over 50 sea, air and rail routes from around Europe and the rest of the world.

they'll have to be chipped, given shots, and i think animals from outside the eu have to be quarantined

Go to your vet and talk about getting a pet pass port they will know what to do. We are moving to dublin and our sweet baby doggie has to come too ofcourse so we are getting her shots, and a pet passport to speed up the quarantine process if they see your pet is vaccinated and chipped, and has a pet pass port they will let you go with them. Instead of staying locked in some horrible place. And I would imagine for cats it would be faster. When people ask about them just say oh well I just found them when I first got off the plane XD

I could be wrong, but I know a friend who took his cats out of the country, on a permanent basis. All vac's have to be up to date, they need a passport (per se) and must be chipped. And, I think cos of the flight, you have to get something from the vet to knock them out, and they're put in the luggage place (awww)

Yes, there is the six-month quarantine to bring animals into Ireland, and there's not a lot you can do about it. You could give your cats away in the US.

styrckt
they will be quaranteened ,

for how long is a guess, you can visit them anytime
