Irish people catholics-english people sent english and scottish protestants into the north of ireland in the 1600's and took the land of the irish and housed themselves.Irish people were left homeless in these areas unless they pledged their loyalty to the english throne and converted there religion to become a protestant.Thats how northern ireland exists today half the residents are irish while the other half british.they fight over how rightly owns it-the british government are in control of it.
Im canadian of british ancestry but as u know britian once ruled the world-they invaded ireland but ireland always gave as good as they got thats the source of the problem.there were terroist factions on bothsides.the irish ones bombing britian while the british ones bombing the republic of ireland.
complicated stuff i know.

If you look up Ulster in the Wikipedia you'll have more luck.

Ignore the person who mentioned the Reformation, the conflict in Northern Ireland is very specific, it's not just about religion. The Reformation was a Europewide event in the 1500s.

In the very, very, very simple version of events, in 1921 the island of Ireland was split in two, 6 counties in Ulster became Northern Ireland & remained as part of the UK, while the other 26 counties became a separate nation which was initially the Irish Free State & eventually became the Republic of Ireland. In Northern Ireland, in the very simple version of events, the majority Protestant population want to remain under British rule & remain part of the UK, the minority Catholic population identify themselves as Irish & would like a united Ireland. In order to achieve these aims there are numerous political parties on both sides & terrorist organisations.

I would like to reiterate, this is the very, very simple version of events, it is not representative of everyone's opinion & in no way captures the complexity of the situation.

Yet again...another inflammatory question from the US!

Why don't these people do a google search if they are really interested in finding out about and learning?

At the bottom of the page it states that this question has been asked by someone in the US!

Ireland had nothing to do with, nor was it involved in any way with the reformation.

To help you understand (interrobang inserted) follow the link

Not reformation..plantation.

Froggequene is right. If you want to try wikipedia, have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Troubles

Ignore the first answer.
Look up Ulster or Northern Ireland on wikipedia. Frogge has given the best details though really.

Sshhhh! It's Podge and Rodge
It all had to do with how they cracked open a boiled egg.
The Nationalists argued that it should be opened on the smaller end, the Loyalists argued that it should be opened at the bigger end.
They've now agreed to poach them instead.

One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter.

Lol I see an Englishman with lots of thumbs has got past security.

No, don't look at Reformation, look at Ireland, and read up about William of Orange, and this will explain it all.

Catholics and Protestants. They've been fighting since the Reformation.
