What are the main differences between living in Dublin, Ireland and London, Britain?

The City Centre of Dublin is a lot smaller than London, which is huge, although the sprawling suburbs of Dublin mean it is seen as much larger. Dublin has fabulous places to go out and it's really easy to meet people - it's a very friendly place. London is really a collection of villages put together to make one huge city - Dublin is much more like one of Britain's other cities in size. Both are expensive, but Ireland is very, very expensive (more so than London) - everything costs more except petrol (which is significantly cheaper!). Dublin has a great atmosphere and lots going on but if you relish the large jobs market that London has, then although there are opportunities in Dublin there is not the same wealth of them. Dublin is much prettier than London too - there are (deliberately due to laws) no very tall buildings in the city centre so it has retained much original character and you get more natural light down many streets.

If I could live in either I would live in Dublin for sure - I currently live in Chester so not living in either city right now!

A friend I used to work with from Roscommon moved to London last year. He thought it would just be like moving to Dublin, but when I went over to see him earlier this year he said he found the differences difficult to cope with at first.

Dublin is smaller, friendlier with a fun element to the way of life. Ok, so the traffic is terrible, and our public transport a joke, employment opportunities are becoming limited again, after years of growth in the economy. My friend said while he felt his career was progressing (he's an accountant), he found it very difficult to get people to open up, and to make friends. I found it bizarre they way people didn't randomly chat to you,& my friend who travelled over with me who smokes, found it strange that no one spoke to her when she was out having her ciggie. Maybe us Irish are just verbal whores, we'd talk to anyone, and the people in London are just private. however, London is a fabulous city, loads to do and see, but its expensive. Even more expensive than Dublin to live and work in.

The answer lies in why are you planning to move? If for career than go for it. When I worked in the UK I found I was rewarded for the work I did, not the qualifications I have (like Ireland). Good luck with what you decide.

i have lived in ireland for 10 years and it is so friendly i am originally from manchester,irish people are so friendly ,the cost of living is pretty high here ,ipay â‚¬50 just to see the doctor,

Dublin has more a sense of community.

I was born and bred in London but have been to Dublin on numerous occasions and the one big factor that sticks out is the people, you won't find a friendlier nation than the Irish, very helpful, like a good old gossip and make you feel at home. London now is so multi cultural it has lost its identity, nobody speaks to you not even your next door neighbour, if I had a choice give me Dublin any time.

Why????
The Union Jack represents Britain, ans London being the capital of England, thyen Dublin is considered a mini version of London, hence the name Jackeens.

London is bigger , more multicultural, english speaking and close to most of Uk. Dublin is Irish focussed, Catholic mostly so is religious that way and wet often from rain. Both can be good depending on your perspective. Both use different money too, different sports, and view each other with a degree of suspicion because of the IRA reign of terror in the north of Ireland ( Ulster ) and England for many years.
