Let me dispell a little myth: Dublin is NOT where everything happens, but a lot does happen in Dublin.

It is not the only city in the Republic of Ireland, merely the biggest and the capital. It's also the most expensive part of Ireland, but well worth visiting if you have a couple of days.

Ireland is largely a rural country, so the best parts are the countryside and the small towns and villages. You would need to hire a car to get to many of these, but do not burden yourself with a car in Dublin city - you leave it for five minutes, it's clamped, or removed by the local authorities, and you have to offer them your first-born child to get it back (not literally, but you know what I mean I am sure).

Bear in mind that while it is a small country and you can drive the length of it in one day, it's a long drive. The roads in the Republic are not built for large volumes of high-speed traffic. Roads in general are narrow and twisty, and most of the national roads have only one lane each way. Expect to take seven hours at least to drive from Dublin to Dingle town. That's without a toilet break.

If you're only planning on doing the cities, take the train. Much easier!

Irish people are very friendly, but we don't like to be patronised. Please don't do the 'Oh, you're from Ireland? My auntie's cousin's husband's sister was an O'Kelly from Cork, do you know her?, because of course we DON'T know her. Yes, it's nice that you have family connections in Ireland, but don't expect us to care (unless you're related to us and you're rich, in which case we will care very much indeed).

Generally we avoid subjects that can get people upset: religion, politics, right now money and the cost of living has just been officially added to the list, and war. Why talk about these unhappy things when there are so many more interesting things to talk about?

I'd recommend going to Dublin.

I went there earlier this year and it was great.

The people were friendly, the atmosphere was great.

And there are some good places to visit.

afternoon delight! ;o)
the people are lovely (i havta say that cuz im from ireland)...
I don't find the place interesting but that's because where ur from is just so ordinary to u... people i've seen touring ireland and stuff, seem to have a great time! i'm from dublin and it's fun for nightlife, galway is just a brilliant county - people and scenery and mountains... kerry is nice and has some interesting historical stuff, then you could also get northern ireland in on it and go to belfast (but you'd need sterling for that) and also the giants causeway is up north too!

Due baby no.3 on the 4th of June
Sure we're all as mad as old boots, come visit, Ireland could do with some more tourists........any money helps considering the imminent recession!!! =0(

Im in Dunmore East in Waterford which is in the "sunny" South East""

The Imperialist
If your not from Ireland you will love it, but if you live here you will probably Absolutely hate it.

Bad reasons
1. there hasn't been a summer in two years
2. were in a recession
3. its always wet and cold

Good reasons
1. Were very friendly
2. we love our drink
3. and we even love a good session even more

The people are ok, but you'll come across a lot of people who are racist, which is totally unacceptable, and then their are the rich who are stuck up snobs, and finally their is the regular joe's who are ok and just live their lives.

hope this helps

the north coast of northern ireland is outstanding and derry is a fun city most of the international people I meet in the youth hostel there have a whale of a time and love it best because it still has community an dloads of character.

It s good clean fresh air plenty of space not light polluted oyu can see the stars and beautiful scenery and dont even bank on a shop being open if you are outside of a city.

Is máith liom cáca millís!
My thoughts on Ireland;
Home
Legend place
Comedy

Kris......
I am a Brit and have lived here for nearly four years, and I would not go back to live in the UK if you paid me, everywhere has its good and bad points, but the quality of life is far superior to that of our easterly neighbours.

My hair is on fire
Well I hate it only cause I live there, but it's a beautiful place the people are easy going, we enjoy a bit of craic!

Tyler D
I love the place I think some one has already said Dublin, Dublin = Great fun, hope you have a good time if you decide to go.

Ireland is fantastic. I lived and worked there for a time a couple of years ago. Dublin is where everything happens, but the west coast has some beautiful scenery and attractions.
