Some people don't know the difference between immigration and emigration!

The current high immigration here only causes problems when people are not prepared to work. People from other parts of europe in particular often work very hard and do indeed contribute to the economy. However, we get a lot of immigrants who claim to be escaping persecution in their own countries and are not here to work but to live off the system and this is particularly bad. It has led to a crisis situation in our maternity hospitals, for example.

I welcome immigrants who are prepared to contribute to the country in some way and are not just here to freeload. It is great to meet people from other cultures.

It's good for our economy, and no they're not taking our jobs because we're too snobby to work in fast food restaurants etc... anymore,so I don't see anything wrong with immigration

The Questioner
It is good for our the country. For centuries Irish people went over all the world to work. Now that those days are over, we should welcome those who have come to live and work amongst us. Of course there will be some who think they are here for a free lunch, but the same applied to some Irish people who thought that the world owed them a living.

It's good for our economy and it's keeping our inflation down, so I don't see why not! = )

I am pleased with the cultural consequences, in particular in relation to restaurants and eating out. 20 years ago, coffee was rubbish, you couldn't get a decent kebab and pizzas were a joke. Now the food is so much better, and there are so many other options.

I also like the colour and other customs that are coming in from other places. I don't know if all of these are compatible with Irish customs, but those that are not will most likely fade out naturally, or become assimilated in some way. The nature of culture is that it is very fluid and adaptable, as well as identifiable.

What I think is just great is that I am starting to see some Polish and African names on GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) teams.

The idea that its good for our economy just isn't true...this might have been the case a few years ago but since the downturn in our economy immigrants are costing us millions through social welfare, unemployment benefits etc. so that cant be good for us!!!

But the other way to look at the argument is that 100 years ago it was Irish people who were immigrating all over the World and now the favour is being returned
