Curious question. I get the feeling maybe you already know the answer to that. In a word, nothing.
Lord Mountbatten never had any ill feelings towards the Irish or Ireland as a country. He was on a holiday in the north western part of the country, when he decided to go for a trip on his yacht. An Garda Siochana, the Irish police, warned him that as he was a member of the royal family, he was considered a "legitimate" target for the IRA and he was not safe where he was staying. Legitimate in the IRA's opinion I might add, not by Ireland as a nation.
Bundoran, in County Donegal was a popular area for the IRA and its sympathisers at the time and was near to where Mountbatten's yacht was moored. Two other people were murdered that day, an 83 year old woman and two teenage boys.
A memorial service was later held in Dublin for Mountbatten and was attended by our then President, Patrick Hillery and our Taoiseach Jack Lynch (The Irish equivalent of a Prime Minister).
It's not so much what this man did, but what he stood for by a small group of people, who did not, and today, still do not represent the feelings of the overwhelming majority of Irish people.
Peace. |

Nothing, as far as I know. Still, I think he was naive. I would imagine that to the people who killed him he was a representative of all that they despised. I would liken it to Saddam Hussein going to london for his holidays and thinking he was quite safe. Its unfortunate what happened to him but it was naive arrogance on his part not to recognise that he would be a target during the troubles. |

Mountbatten had a favoured holiday home in Mullaghmore, a small seaside village in County Sligo. His murder was something I still fail to understand as it served no purpose at all.
There is still some confusion as to whether the IRA actually claimed reponsability for his death but the person convicted was a member of the IRA who has since been released under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement.
Mountbatten did nothing to Ireland but the IRA killed him because of his connection with the British establishment, it was his misfortune that he liked fishing and boating in Ireland. |

Mountbatten was a royal. The IRA seen him as a legitimate political target. He was every thing that the ira detested.
Imagine if prince harry went to iraq it would be seen as a shot directly at the royal family if one of theirs was killed by insurgents.
The sadest thing about this is Mountbatten believed in a united Ireland.
---------------------Joke-------------...
Must warn you the following joke is in poor taste if you are easily offended please do not read on...................
How did they know that mountbatten went swimming the day of the explosion.
