Really, when people talk about Limerick it's always in a derogatory manner..I spend a lot of time in Limerick and have to tell you it's very different from Dublin and Cork..not better or worse just different.
The people are always nice and helpful, don't always understand the accent but I have that problem in Cork.

Honestly? The first thing that springs to mind is "stab city" but I know that's a big exaggeration the media like throwing around. It can't be nearly as much of a shithole as my beloved hometown of Carlow. =]
