What do you think of Americans?

What do you think of Americans?
What are your views about Americans? Our culture? [Food, Music, Movies] Our lifestyle? How do you feel about America? Do you see it as a land of opportunity?

I'm asking this because of all of the ads on the irish webpages about winning green cards to the "land of opportunity" as well as my pure curiosity.
Additional Details
Just an added note, when you picture a "typical american" what do you see physically?

Most Americans are very nice, very helpful. But can come across as gullible or very simplistic. By that I mean, they seem to lack irony and are very honest.

I travelled a lot around the US, west coast, mid west and New York, and your food is fairly unimaginative. My friend is a chef, she lives there and was amazed to find most places, just have short order cooks, rather than qualified chefs. So her skills were lost in homogenised egg cartons.

I wouldn't live there, well maybe New York. I think the health care system is scandalous, yous don't have enough paid holidays, and the gap between rich and poor is amazing.

It's impossible to describe a typical American, nice teeth, and a baseball cap!!

They used to keep our country afloat.
Then they stopped coming.
They seem to have a lot of negative stereotypes for us Irish.
And I don't really see any culture, just having a turkey on Thanksgiving and taking a few holidays for the Freedom of your country.
Your lifestyle...a lot of negative stuff that may not be true.
I'd like to go to America, just to experience it.
Land of opportunity...not anymore.

He's gone fishing.
Due to the Media, a lot of people think that Americans are uneducated, power hungry and want a war. However, One of my best mates is a Yank, he is an awesome fella. I travelled the US in 2007 and found the vast majority of people were well educated, decent hard working, friendly, very welcoming and helpful. No one I spoke to wanted to be involved in any international conflict, nor wanted their troops overseas. I would love to live in the US. Every person I met just wanted to have a good time and be left alone to live their lives, much like us Aussies. You have much more freedom in America than you do here in Australia. People will disagree, however I did numerous things that were legal in America but illegal in Australia. We could go where we wanted to and didnt get raped over the price. We had the best time. Your Culture: We went to a Halloween party which was the best (As we don't celebrate it here), The food was great, but there was way too much on the plate, (Twice as much for half the price compared to Australia). Walmart was awesome, have never seen anything like it. But I still love Australia.
.
P.S. Funny thing is that I don't know why we call Americans 'Yanks'. We just do.

Okay, I'm going to try and not be mean but, what culture? Any little bit of culture in America has just been taken from another country or culture really.
Lifestyle? Well, I think life is too serious and fast-paced in America, ye need to learn how to relax.
The land of opportunity? Hell no, I'd never, ever want to spend more than a week in America.
Physicallyl? Well it's either an overweight, non-attractive person, or a blonde botoxed stunner.
Sorry.

I don't think the US is the 'land of opportunity' at the moment ... but the same can be said for everywhere else.

America's great art form is music - blues, rock 'n' roll, rap, country and western. Aside from Marilyn Manson and some great films, that's it.

To look at, you're either very fat or very thin. I don't see too many 'average'.

You seem to be a nation grappling with food issues. Get out and walk once in a while!

And having been to the US, it's a whole different planet. I found it very hard to engage with Americans while there.

I'm an American, and I see us the way a lot of other countries do. We are "The Fast Food Nation". We love Wal-Mart, french fries, steak, boobs, beer and football. Stereotype? Sure. But the majority of Americans all the think the same. Despite all of these stereotypes, a lot of people look past the good and go to the bad. We work our asses off daily, we support our families, cook our own food, and most of us can speak a vast amount of different languages. Americans are just like citizens from any other country; we are just trying to survive. Don't get me wrong, a lot of the problems we've had in the past are still here, but for the first time in a while I see sun over the horizon, and I think this country will soon be what it was created to be... a place of opportunities.

I think the whole world is Americanized. And i think americans are money obsessed, and all about materialism.

Food - Americans dont have a cuisine, use's just steal everyone elses lol
Music - is good
Movies- are the best, but mostly shiteous.

Typical American in my mind - Fat and Rich, Blonde and Dumb, or Poor.

I heard in America you're either really rich or really poor?

crystal
I'm an American and just had to chime in... I think it's hard to stereotype the whole country when it's so big! So I'll give some details on where I live in New Mexico. We have a dominantly hispanic culture and the best green chile you'll ever have. I have to say New Mexican food is very different from Mexican cuisine. We have a very high cost of living when the majority of the population is just at or below the federal poverty level. The scenery and sunny weather are probably in the top ten of the U.S. and is one of the reasons why people stay here. The education, public transportation, and health systems are under parr with a few exceptions. We have alot of people here that only speak spanish, so if you go to school in their neighborhoods then they usually teach in both english and spanish. But if you live in the other parts of town it's only english and you have to take spanish in highschool. I think that area is where I am envious of other countries the most. I would have loved to learn a few languages as I grew up, but I can only understand some spanish and can't speak it at all.

I think one of the misconceptions of American's is that we are our government. I don't think most of us like that our government sends troops everywhere and gets into everyone else's business and not all of us are judgemental. There are alot of materialistic people here.. so I'll have to agree with that one.

We Aussies see Americans as "Those fellas in the movies."
Most of us don't know much about America apart from what we see on TV.

Americans are just people like the rest of the world, however there are certain types of American tourists who come off as incredibly stupid, or ignorant, or just plain annoying for instance there are the American tourists that feel the need to talk at the top of there voices as load as they can like its purpesly done so that anyone within a mile of them knows that there American, or the americans that believe there Irish because they have Irish ancestores,
theres the American tourists that are extreamly ignorant, for instance I myself have been asked by an american what parts of Ireland are still in the famine! or even thinking that ireland is still part england, this annoys most irish because ireland has not been english since 1922, and we fought very hard for our independance, granted there is a small part of ireland in the north that is still part of england.
apart from this small manourity, most americans are very nice and educated people.
we also have obese people and blonde bimbo's just like america and every other country.
honestly I dont know why americans are called yankee's? iv never thought about it?
also here st. patricks day is called paddys day not pattys day!
and to be honest Ireland really isnt that much different from America, we have all the same technology, same types of people, food, music, movies ect ect, and the culture isnt very much different from America especially in the east of the country, were Dublin is just like any orther big city like London or New York, only Dublins proberbly smaller in size, the difference id say is that mabey Ireland is a bit more relaxed about stuff,
Its mostley Canada that is known for oppertunities because so many Irish have gone there in the last few years for work because the irish economy is crumbling to pieces and it had the most work going out of most other countrys.

Majority of the people worldwide love America as a diverse culture/country... But people of America are thought to be nutshells (Including Myself) because they elected Bush once, who by all means screwed up the world.. and that sh*therd got elected again, because of whom we have this recession going on... Now what would anyone think about Americans? Peace loving nation or war mongers?

We are electing leaders who are ripping off our good reputation around the world. Americans are being targeted everywhere. We are no more safe, not even in the U.S because we created our enemies and our troops are busy fighting in other countries.

I'm American and I visit friends in Donegal regularly, I am the 1st to say there is a lot wrong with Americans, they can be ignorant, Provencal, intolerant, over fed, lazy, and crazy but they can also be innovative, there for you in a pinch, resourceful, passionate, and open minded. This is a huge country with hundreds of cultures, there are almost as many militant tree hugging vegans as there are burger and coke gulping walmart patrons. Remember Ireland is about the size of New Jersey with LESS people. This question is like asking "How do you picture Europeans?" The last time I took a bus from Letterkenney to Dublin some University students asked me if all Americans were like the people on the Jerry Springer Show. Honestly, no one in the US thinks all Ireland is like Ballykissangel. Remember the US has one of the largest populations of people of Irish ancestry in the world, including Ireland.

I'm American, and I know that there are many that suck, but like any stereo type, it's only some. This country contains many pepople that are vastly different. I live in one of the most diverse cities in the world, yet, it doesn't embody the country as a whole.

I am American and am finding these answers very funny. I particularly love it when they say "I've heard..." Oh really? So you don't actually know anything and you are just gossiping about something you have no experience of? Nice one. Or perhaps they went to Florida once and base their entire view of the US on that and movies...which is the same mentality as thinking that the Irish still all live in little thatched cottages and wear thick aran jumpers. Tourists tend to make snap judgements based on their own cultural background that have little actual basis. Most Irish have no idea of what American culture is unless they have lived in the US. They seem to have a faux familiarity with it via the media.

I always laugh when Irish people complain that Americans have "no culture". Go play a Van Morrison song and tell me; who exactly is he imitating? Could he possibly be singing American style soul music?

We have our faults and some bad apples, like everyone else. I think Americans are very diverse and tolerant. We make mistakes, true. But we admit them and try to fix things and move on. We are optimistic and adaptive. We are generous to a fault. And we do have a fine culture and excellent food, thanks. McDonald's isn't "typical American food" any more than cheap bad food is anywhere. Every nationality has it's cheap food.

I like this response to the typical American question by the French humorist Paul Blouët (Max O’Rell):
"...I have said that inquisitiveness was the chief American trait, and that it arose from the childish character of a man who belongs to a great, successful, but young, nation. Are there not other traits, more or less typical of American manners, arising from the same cause? I believe there are. Generosity, impulsiveness, forgiveness, and—excuse the word—cheek are among them. The American runs wildly after the dollar, but he is lavish of it: he does not love it; he likes it for what it procures; and avarice, which you so commonly find in England and in France, is a vice—an ugly vice—that you very seldom find in an American. He will resent an insult, but very quickly forgets it; and there is no man in the world that can stand good-humored chaffing as well as he does. He is audacious, simply because he has done such marvellous things in such a short time that he simply believes nothing is impossible to him. His ideas are eccentric, but eccentricity is only an exaggerated form of the activity of mind. He lives on a continent so vast that he can hardly see a limit to it..."

How do I picture the typical American? That's easy. Look in our white house.

Pres. Barack Obama is a child of immigrant stock, was raised by a single mother and his grandparents, has ties to other cultures in addition to being American, worked hard to become educated, and is a progressive and ambitious person. He is optimistic by nature and looks forward. No one handed him anything, he was not the son of the aristocrisy or born rich - he succeeded or failed on his own merit and efforts. Sounds very American to me.

Edit - About the huge portions of food common in lower end eateries: Americans don't generally eat all of the huge portions of food that restaurants dish out - we eat half and then take the rest home for next days lunch at work in a doggie bag. It's an American tradition. The server might ask you if "you'd like that wrapped up" if you have a lot left on your plate at the end of the meal. Just another cultural difference.

Every nationality has awful tourists that annoy locals when they are abroad - even the Irish. Americans are not any worse in that respect.
