A BAD PERSON

janus
A Knackers was a place where Horses were Brought to be Slaughtered. When a Horse damaged itself and could not be cured it was sold to the Knackers Yard and it would be Shot Originally and then an Special Cattle Gun was used that fired a Metal bolt into it's Head. It would be Rendered Down and made into Soap and Candles and Glue, and also it's Bone into Rosary Beads. So it became a Word to Insult the Travelling Community or Itinerants or anyone else that was considered no use or bad. It also became a Slang Word to Jeer somebody in a serious or Friendly Fashion.

There was O Keefe's The Famous Knackers in Dublin for many Years in Ardee Street the Coombe who only closed down in recent Years. Up to the 1960ties there were a lot of Business's that still used A Horse and Dray in Dublin. There is still one or two Horses used in the Markets to bring Fruit and Vegetable to Moore Street Dublin.

Why did Janus get a thumbs down??? His is the most complete and accurate answer here, explaining what a Knacker actually is and where the slang term derived from. He is 100% correct. As regards to O'Keffe's the Knackers, I live in Pimlico right beside where they used to be, they closed up in the late 70's. My Mam and Dad always talked about the awful smell that came from the yard.

The term Knacker then transcended from the original meaning to act as a derogatory term for members of the travelling community and now is also used to loosely mean (depending on what region you're from) a Scally/Sconnie/Chav/Skanger etc.....

Kym R
It can mean a "chav" or a member of the travelling community

annah
A nacker is a rude and offensive term used to insult someone in a traveling community (a caravan)...there generally nice people though..just don't get on the wrong side of them or you will regret it!! Its safe to say NEVER say it in public!!

it probably has other meanings...but that's the one im most familiar with!

nodunromin
Where you took old horses

Multifarious word with a plethora of uses. Can mean

A) very tired (of a person, usually in past tense),
B) broken or injured (of a thing or body part, usually in past tense),
C) testicle, singular (knackers plural),
D) a person who kills and disposes old and worn out horses before they are buried and/or rendered into glue or possibly star in snuff animal porn movies specially made for Danish truckers in Milton Keynes.

Puzzledirishgirl
Its Knacker. It depends but it can mean someone from the traveller community, You can also say Your such a knacker meaning your a scumbag (but in a messing way). I say it to people messing.

Leaine Ni Loingsigh
Generally a traveller or someone else you can look down on.
