Here's a useful website for you: www.discoverireland.ie.

Dublin is still very 'English' compared to the rest of the country, even Dubliners have admitted this. Still worth a visit, though.

Depending on how long you have, pick a region and concentrate on that, don't kill yourself trying to take in the entire country in a week, that's just no fun. Bear in mind that while distances seem short on a map, it takes at least twice as long to drive those distances than it would in the US. Irish roads are not built for large volumes of high-speed traffic. We have very few motorways. Plus automatic cars are rare, we use stick shifts and the steering wheel is on the right, and you drive on the left. Think about this before renting a car, for your first visit, you might prefer to take a coach tour and sit back and enjoy the scenery.

I'm in the south-west of Ireland, in County Limerick, it's a bit off the beaten track, but I like it. The best places in Ireland are off the beaten track ... but you need a car and a lucky accidental wrong turn to find them. I'm not far from Kerry, and not far from Clare ... hilly country. Just a few miles away is a reconstructed Famine village on one of the few Commonages we still have. It's a bit hilly and inconvenient to be a real tourist draw, but that's alright ....

I think that if you try delphiforums.com, there's a forum there called Everything Ireland, and you'll find lots of experienced USA-based Ireland veterans there who can give you great tips.

Have a lovely holiday, no matter where you end up.

Oh, and one more thing - everything we have said about the weather in Ireland IS TRUE ..... bring good shoes and raingear. Even if you're coming in July.

I absolutely loved Ireland...a month and a half wasn't long enough :(

I would take her:

Dublin - check out the castles and eat at O' Neill's pub (it's amazing!) Oh and go to the Guinness and Jameson Distilleries
Galway - Great night life...Cliffs of Moher and the Aran Islands are beautiful scenic places
Cork - Blarney Castle of course

There are so many places to go in Ireland but those are probably my favorite places to go. Make sure you keep an open mind about things like food (it's kind of bland) and the people are really nice so if you are lost just ask someone they are really helpful.

Hope this helps!
