How about a food item from a specialty store that's not readily available for consumption? There's an Irish shop in St Augustine, Fl that has all kinds of cookie and cake mixes and food items that I assume are regional to Ireland, and not abroad, so maybe she can order something like that on line.

A good sod of turf! Cans of Guinness! Jamesons whiskey! Tayto crisps! The new Roinne Drew Cd!

Unfortunately food items are often detected and confiscated at customs - I tried to bring Clonakilty pudding to a friend in BC and had it taken from me. Something like Taytos or Cadbury's chocolate bars are a good choice - they're not fresh food items and should be allowed. Copies of magazines like Magill are good for catching up on current affairs, and old-time mags like Ireland's Own are good for a laugh. A newsletter or newspaper from the town or county he's from would be hard to get in Canada and full of local news and gossip. Those are the things I missed most when I lived away. Most international Irish brands like Guinness or Jameson are easy to find abroad.
