Being from the US, I seriously doubt that the average dress size in the US is a 14 - I would say it is more of an 8 or 10 US. If you look at the sales in the stores - it is all the very small and large sizes that are still there. The 6, 8 and 10 sizes sell out first.I don't know where they get these averages from, but the people who gather the data don't shop at women's stores.

I'd say the average for Ireland (again, just going by how hard it is to find certain sizes in the shops on sale) is likely a size 12 or a US size 8. I'm a size 8 US in dresses 12 UK/Ireland and it's always hard to find my size.

These surveys always seem a bit made up to me. Where do they pull the data from?

American dresses are cut bigger in the bust and hips than most Irish clothing it seems. Waist is the same.

Aisling, read that article again! It says the average size of an Irish MODEL is size 10, not the average woman. Keep in mind that the average will include all women, all age groups. Post-childbirth women and older women tend to be heavier than the average teen or 20-something, therefore it is very unlikely that the average Irish woman is size 12-14. A recent WHO health study put the Irish as one of the most obese in the developed world. According to the Irish Independent, the average dress size in Ireland today is 16.

Originally i thought it would have been a 12 - 14 but just had a sconse on the web there and foound an article on the size 0 debate and it said,.. 'The average dress size of an Irish model is a U.K 10, the average waist is approximately 25â€™, average bust 34-36â€™, whilst the average hips are approximately 38â€™ wide....
This is actually kinda thin! Wouldn't have expected it to be like this!
