The people are great, but as with everywhere we have our fair share of *****.

Politics in NI is a joke, all it does is tell us how many people are nationalists and unionists and for the most part it's entirely ineffective in doing anything other than prop up sectarian divisions.

The 4 biggest parties (who represent over 90% of the people who bother to vote) are obsessed with the United Ireland vs the Union question. They are high on rhetoric with little or no policies and their survival is dependent on the sectarian divisions in our society remaining.

The result is (I've posted this before so apologies if you've already read it) is an.

Sinn Fein Education minister who refuses to call a meeting about what will replace the transfer exam and so no-one has any idea what the criteria for children getting in to secondary schools will be

A DUP minister for the environment who doesn't believe in global warming.

A DUP health spokesperson who is on record as saying homosexuality is an abomination worse than child sex abuse

A SF agriculture minister who made farmers cue for days for farm grants which were given on a '1st come 1st served basis, which is totally illegal in the EU.

Our politicians are inept and unable to govern and elected through fear of the other side gaining control and while I welcome the recent unity they’ve shown in the last few days I’m sick to death feeling the need to congratulate politicians for talking to each other and doing feck all else.

Margret Ritchie is the only minister I have any respect for in NI

politically Northern Ireland hasn't been so single purposed in centuries, with all but a handful desiring peace and prosperity

I'm a republican so obviously I think the political situation has improved vastly, however I am furious at the fcukers who killed the british soldiers last week.
people, no problems with them though i cant stand the accent

If your referring to the recent killings up the north then it hasn't changed the political side of Ireland because the government is still all in agreement that peace is what they want so just because a few vigilante's try and cause trouble doesn't change the good friday agreement.

Well, Northern ireland is a beautiful country.
The Giant's courseway, the walled city of Londonderry, the holy city of Downpatrick (St patrick's Death) and the religious capital of Ireland (Armagh), Belfast is also a properous modern city! The countryside is green and rolling.

But NI gets a bad press due to the past.

A lot of American's seem to side with the Republicans unjustly.

If most Northern Irish people wanted to join Ireland, then I could understand,
but the majority of people do wish to remain part of the UK, and this should be understood and respected.

The people of the country have moved on, and politics is now as boring as anywhere else :)

Visit! It's lovely.
Just don't go walking down the Falls Road waving a Union Flag in an orange sash singing god save the queen at 1am :)
and like wise don't walk down the Shankill Road singing Danny Boy waving a Tricolour :)

- RESPONSE TO CRAZY CLIVE -
Ok firstly, most Protestants are of Scottish Origin, Not English.

Secondly, they have been there for hundreds of years!
On your basis, the Americans should all move back to Europe and give the land back to natives?
And the Palestininas should move back to Arabia and give the land back to the Israelites?
The Celtic Irish only arrived in Ireland around 400 BC, before that, another people's lived there, so surely all the Irish should leave and give the Ireland back to them?
You can't just say, well the land is ours, because we had it for a rough time period.

If you all hate Britain so much, and you're all so Irish
why don't you all speak Gaelic like good little Hibernians?
Because Gaelic is dead.
You all speak English, you all drink tea, you drive on the left, you're all christians, you're all white celtic/germanic hybrid people's and you all live on the ''British Isles'' (Not implying they're British, just using the name in the Geographical Sense)
The difference is petty. The War was petty, the cause is petty.
Get Over it, If you don't like it, and you want to be ruled by ireland, why not use your advice?
And leave Northern ireland and move to ireland?

hey someone91. u say that most people in Northern Ireland dont want Ireland to be "one" again and this should be respected.

I think that if they want to be ruled by the british then they move to england, the opinions of people in Northern Ireland who want their country to be free again should be respected and understood. After all, Britain has invaded their land and started to rule them and they have no say in it. I say, if you want to be ruled by a different Government..move to that country.. instead of them taking over yours when not every1 agrees wants it. Lets not forget, if Britain didn't invade Ireland in the first place, there would be no so thing as "the troubles" and there wouldn't have been 1000's upon 1000's of innocent lives taken.

If Britain are using the excuse of "protestants in Northern Ireland want to be part of the British government".....then what is there excuse for invading India, the Falklands, Liberia, the list is endless. And, oh yes, most rcently, helping the Americans invade Iraq looking for "weapons of Mass Destrustion".... which translates to stealing "Oil" reserves.

Oh yes.... and Danny Boy is actually a Protestant song, not a Catholic 1, if you research it!!:)

Northern Ireland's Political issues are a mess. The people in Power in Northern Ireland, from both sides, don't have aclue what they are doing, they are all idiots!!

Not sure if you mean Netherlands but if you do...I have a great deal of respect for the way that they run the country. I'm part Dutch but born and raised in the USA. Considering the neighboring countries that have been around as long as they have I believe they do the best job of being responsible to their citizens. The majority of their neighbors do not have a middle class and partake is gross amount of negligence not only to their own citizens but to the rest of the world and take no responsibility. For instance...the AIDS and HIV epidemic, which predominately is spread in two ways...unprotected sex and sharing dirty needles. Well the first way is an easy fix...either abstinence or condoms. Heroine on the other hand is not so easy to abstain from when you're addicted so whether it's illegal or not these people are not going to stop using. The decision to legalize it was the most socially responsible course of action to the citizens. By only allowing them to use it in a designated area it makes it easier it to monitor especially in the event of overdoses and things of that nature but most importantly the regulation and oversight provides clean needles and reduces overdoses resulting from shady dealers that cut the drug with other things to make more money and tackles the main issue which was effectively reduce the risk of HIV and/or AIDS infection by heroine users. While other countries like France for instance dealing with the same issue of growing population contracting HIV/AIDS b/c of the heroine use and they do nothing. And then there is England, who had been appointed to handle the narcotics division in Afghanistan, which makes sense since they have Interpol. Well either they're not doing their job or they're not doing it good enough b/c currently Afghanistan produces 150% of the world demand while India and Ireland are faced with a growing population drowning in all that heroine. So when you see a common problem amongst nations that are near each other and have just as many resources to try and solve these problems and they do nothing. To me it speaks volumes to their dedication to serving the people of their country.
