The official title of the poem is 'Bímse Buan ar Buairt Gach Ló' and it is commonly called 'Mo Ghile Mear' from the line in the chorus. It was written by the Cork poet Seán Clárach Mac Domhnaill

Mo ghile mear, or my shining hero. A song about a guy who goes to war in France and the girl is lamenting his going because she doesn't know if she'll ever see him again. I think it dates from the 1700s.

Is e mo laoch,mo GHILLE MEAR,
Is e mo Shaeser, GILLE MEAR;
Ni bhfuaireas fein aon tsuean ar sean
