So what about the fact that if we vote no they will give us a better deal? A plan B so to speak? You could argue that even if you wanted to vote yes it would still be in our best interest to vote no?

I'll probably be voting yes, though I'll have to read up on it a bit more before hand. I don't think you're "died for Ireland" point is very relevent either

Edit: Mrs Darcy- why would you vote no to something because you don't undersatnd it? I suggest you either read up on it, like on http://www.lisbontreaty2008.ie/ or don't vote at all.

maurice
voting no, because ireland could lose it's neutrality .

wasn't it our new leader who once said "the irish people don't need to understand it, just to vote for it".........that says it all right there.

Still voting yes.
There is no point using irish republican figures as a argument for the no vote as their goal was ireland to have a place on a world stage, Bobby sands died for the right to be recognised as a political prisoner, he indirectly died for ireland but not for the current republic which sinn fein and the IRA do not recognise.
The proclamation of independance, which i might add was signed by some of the people on your link states the following....
"Having organised and trained her manhood through her secret revolutionary organisation, the Irish Republican Brotherhood, and through her open military organisations, the Irish Volunteers and the Irish Citizen Army, having patiently perfected her discipline, having resolutely waited for the right moment to reveal itself, she now seizes that moment, and, supported by her exiled children in America and by gallant allies in Europe, but relying in the first on her own strength, she strikes in full confidence of victory."

Notice the gallant allies in europe part, our patriots were alligned to europe and recognised its assistance in their struggle..

"The Irish Republic is entitled to, and hereby claims, the allegiance of every Irishman and Irishwoman. The Republic guarantees religious and civil liberty, equal rights and equal opportunities to all its citizens, and declares its resolve to pursue the happiness and prosperity of the whole nation and all of its parts, cherishing all of the children of the nation equally and oblivious of the differences carefully fostered by an alien government, which have divided a minority from the majority in the past."...............

Again it goes on to say that the republic should persue the happiness and oppertunity for all its citizens and do what is best to ensure the future prosperity of ireland

Lastly The proclamation mentions " its exaltation among the nations." we tried that before we entered europe by standing alone and it did damage to ireland that was unequalled since the famine, a no vote will cut ireland off from europe, we might have less of a say than we do now.... We drafted this agreement in our presidency of the EU , we were directly involved in its development,

I know that the proclamation can also be used to support the no vote in regards to its references of sovereignty
i am only using it as an example that you cant use dead political figures to sell a no vote, they themselves would be disgusted that their image was being used in this way, they died so we could be at this stage as a nation, not to be used as a scaremongering tactic.

and to the unfettered control of Irish destinies, to be sovereign and indefeasible.
The proclamation states here that we are in charge of our destiny, europe recognises this thats why we have vetos on major economic and other areas in the treaty
.

There is no plan B for this treaty , the french and german governments have prepared an immediate response to be read out after if the no vote wins, thats not a good sign for ireland

I never said they would be disguisted with you, I said they would be disgusted that their images are being used to spread misinformation and that no one can say what they would hae voted if they were still alive, I hope your interpretation of the treaty was better than your interpretation of my question. And i do consider myself irish , just because of my views you condem me, looks like you learned nothing from the people who died for everyone to have their opinion heard, i voted no to changing articles 2 and 3 of our constitution 10 years ago.

Grumples
Defo voting no!

this same treaty has been refused by other countries before. I find it hard to believe that Europe will totally turn its back on us if we don't say yes.

apparently we refused this a few years ago (european consitution was it?) and we were never outcast from the EU.

we don't know the full facts, I reckon vote no until we do get all the correct facts and then make a decision. once we say yes, there is no going back!
