I think the people are very different, I'm just back from a few days in London. One of my friends who smokes said no one looked her in the eye or started a random conversation with her when she was out having her ciggie, which she thought bizarre. Where as in Ireland another friend of mine said she was sitting in a cafe in Dublin deciding on what day of the week would be best to go to Dubai. The waitress, who was cleaning tables near by, interrupted and told her Tuesday would be best, and why she thought so. With that, a couple of women at a table 3 seats away also joined in the conversation. So in brief, the English tend to mind their own business, where in Ireland we never stop talking. Nearly everyone has a story to tell. Which I think in a way is a good thing.
They are also 2 separate countries, different currencies, different political voting systems , even different road signs (Ireland Kilometres, UK Miles). Ireland is a republic, the UK is a monarchy. |

Ireland is an island to the west of Europe.
Britain is a larger island east of Ireland.
England is a country in the south east of Britain, comprising about 50% of Britain.
The UK is a country that unites the 3 countries on the isle of Britain, England, Scotland and Wales, and part of the north east of the island of Ireland, called Northern Ireland.
The south of the island of Ireland is now (since 1921) an independent country called the Republic of Ireland, but before this, it was part of the UK since 1800. Before 1800 it was the Kingdom of Ireland, with its own parliament and government, which shared a king with the United Kingdom of Great Britain.
And incase you're wondering, Britain is called "Great Britain", because the peninsula in north west France is little Britain, or 'Brittany'. |

It depends what you mean by Ireland. Ireland is a island in the north Atlantic ocean and is also an independent republic on that island.
The country of Ireland consists of 26 counties in the south of the Island. The 6 counties in the north of the island are a separate country called Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
The country of England is one of three countries on the Island of Great Britain. It consists of 42 counties. It is located on the south of the island. It is the most populous country on the island. The two other countries are Scotland and Wales. |

Ireland is a big island to the west of great Britain. England is a country on Great Britain. The island of Ireland has two countries on it - the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The Republic has a parliament called an Dail. The UK is governed from its own parliament in London though some powers are devolved to smaller 'assemblies' in Belfast, Cardiff and Edinburgh.
The UK uses the pound sterling although many places in NI will take the euro, which is used in the Republic.
The Irish like to chat and are a friendly nation. England is a bit more reserved and a tad conservative.
Ireland (the island) has a population of approx 7m as opposed to England's population of 55m. |

I should be doing something else

On visiting England and Ireland, the main differences you will notice are:
In Ireland, speed limits are shown in kilometres per hour
The currency is the Euro
Road signs, street names, etc are shown in English and Gaeilge
In England (and the rest of the UK) speed limits are shown in miles per hour
The currency is pounds Stirling
Signs are shown in English only
Also, mobile phone networks are slightly different, certain laws are different ie: abortion is illegal in Ireland |

Christ some people here are morons.
England is not the island to the east of Ireland.
England is a constituent country within the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
England is on an Island called Great Britain.
Ireland is the Island west of Great Britain. 5/6 of the Island of Ireland is the state called Ireland, or in Irish, Éire. The name of the State is IRELAND, not the Republic of Ireland.
The Republic of Ireland is merely the political description of the country called Ireland.
Part of the northern section of the island of Ireland is called the North of Ireland. The state of Ireland is not called Southern Ireland.
The North of Ireland is not "owned" by England. The North of Ireland is a constituent part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, of which England is also a part.
In Ireland, Irish, or Gaeilge, is the primary language. English is the second official language, although it is usually the most spoken language by Irish people.
The national sport of England is Soccer, whereas in Ireland the Gaelic Games are the national sports.
England is ruled by a Monarch, Ireland is a Republic.
England uses the Pound Sterling, Ireland uses the Euro.
England is connected to the land mass of Europe via the channell tunnell.
Ireland is completely unconnected to Europe.
The list can go on ad infinitum. |

The Questioner
 |
England is one of the countries on the island of Britain. There are 3 other countries on that island, Wales, Scotland and Cornwall, although many English consider Cornwall to be a part of England. Together they are at present known as the United Kingdom. Linked with them under the banner of the United Kingdom are 6 of the North Eastern counties of Ireland. Ireland consisting of 32 counties, 6 as mentioned above in the N.E. of the Island, and the remaining 26 counties form the Republic of Ireland. Both Islands have many people from different races, and Faiths, many of them newly arrived from many parts of the world. The Republic of Ireland has the fastest growing population in the E.U. and the fastest growing economy in the E.U. Many people outside of Ireland think that the Irish people are also British, but they are mistaken. Indeed many Scottish, and Welsh people do not consider themselves British. I feel that what has been written here in all the answers, will give you some idea that there is a difference, and what it is. |

Different religions for one. England is "old money" wealthy, and Ireland is "new rich." |

They're 2 separate countries. England is the larger island to the east, Ireland is the smaller one to the west. Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom while Ireland is it's own separate country. Northern Ireland is under British law, but Ireland is not. They have their own separate government. |

I don't know if they still have street signs in Irish there or not, though I heard they once did, after Independence.
There is a greater proportion of Catholics in Ireland than in England.
Ireland was never invaded by the Romans.
Ireland is smaller in area than England.
The principle difference is political. The Republic of Ireland separated from British rule in 1922, becoming the Irish Free State.
I'm not sure about how the sentiment is in Ireland now, but if you walked into any Irish bar in the US on March 17, I wouldn't say anything complimentary about England if I were you. |
