Politically, Ireland is divided into two, namely: Northern Ireland and The Republic of Ireland. Northern Ireland is a part of the United Kingdom, as are Scotland, Wales and England.

The Republic of Ireland, which is largely to the south of N. Ireland (with the exception of the County of Donegal which lies directly to the west of N. Ireland,) is a sovereign state of its own, occupying 5/6 of the entire island of Ireland.

In my opinion, Ireland is all of Ireland including the Republic and North of Ireland.

Southern Ireland is that part of Ireland that contains Cork, Kerry, Waterford, South Tip, Wexford and Kilkenny.

Here's a picture:

I'm guessing you want to know what the differences between the North and the Republic are though! Well, to put it simply NI is part of the UK and the STR£ is its currency. The Republic is governed by itself and the € is its currency.

As it now stands the majority in the North are happy to be a part of the UK and not against their will as some people seem to think.

A good eye witness account to the "troubles" is a book by Kevin Myers which I found it an eye opener. Others may disagree as he isn't always the most popular Irish figure. I don't really agree with his columns myself.

I really don't think that too many people in the "south" can understand what it is to be Northern Irish it is, in some ways, a very different place. By the way, this can be a seriously touchy subject for some.

Chris R said: " You mean Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland?
Northern Ireland is a small province on the northern part of the Irish isle and is a part of the United Kingdom. It is a Protestant country in contrast to the Catholic Republic of Ireland"

This is wrong! the north of Ireland has almost as many Catholics a protestants. anyone with half a brain knows this, why do u think the troubles happened chris?

Good to see that you are so close to your new wife-to-be that you chose to ask strangers about your wife's country instead of talking to her - come on, get it together man!

Ireland is an island. Southern Ireland refers to the southernmost parts of that island. Same as southern France refers to the southernmost parts of France, and so on for any country you care to name.

There is no such country as 'Southern Ireland'.

The island of Ireland has two parts to it - Northern Ireland (which is part of the UK) and Ireland, which is an independent country. Ireland is sometimes called the Republic of Ireland but its official name is Ireland.

The name of the country is Ireland, or in the Irish language Éire. Unless you are the sort of person who refers to Paris as 'Paree' while speaking English, do not call the country 'Éire'.

Bunreacht na hÉireann, the constitution of Ireland, says that "the name of the state is Éire, or, in the English language, "Ireland".

The name of the country is Ireland. There is no such country as 'Southern Ireland' and you will never find anyone born in the Republic of Ireland who would refer to it as 'Southern Ireland'. It is called Ireland.

CHRIS what do you mean that the north of Ireland is protestant?... There is as many Catholics in Northern Ireland as there are protestants so please get your facts right as that can be very insulting to people who live in Ireland.

To the question Ireland is the the island, its divided through politics into Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. There is different currency's, and the republic has more traditional values than the north.

you should talk to your wife as I'm sure she would be happy to talk about her native country.

ochervet
Ireland is the whole of the island.

A few counties in the north are under english rule. i was about to say still, but lets keep the peace shall we....

The Republic is the main part, and the northern counties are part of the UK.

Northern Ireland is a part of the UK. The Republic (the south) is an independant state. They have different goverments, currency and all that.

Ireland is ALL of it.
Southern Ireland is just the south parts of the country.

Its the same for any country. Everywhere has a western, morthern, eastern and southern.

Howerver, with ireland specifically, you might want to read up on the politics and religions, if this is one of your wifes interests. You certainly do not want to upset her by saying the wrong thing about cathlocism, protestantism, or the IRA or the other protestant groups.

Certain areas in ireland have people who believe STRONGLY for one side or the other..

No difference.Irelands the 32 counties.

Why don't you ask your wife to be? Surely she should be able to answer your question. Doesn't sound as though you know her very well.
I believe Northern Ireland is part of Britain , but southern Ireland is self governing. probably many differences.

Wackford Squeers
There is NO SUCH THING as "southern ireland".And its not called "Eire" either, that name was done away with years ago. It is all called the Irish Republic except for a bit in the north which is part of Britain and is called Northern Ireland. Don't ask that question to your wife or any of her friends.

Ireland is an island that is part of the British Isles. The Republic of [Southern] Ireland (or Eire) is a country within that island. Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom (of Great Britain and Northern Ireland).

You mean Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland?

Northern Ireland is a small province on the northern part of the Irish isle and is a part of the United Kingdom. It is a Protestant country in contrast to the Catholic Republic of Ireland--which occupies the large southern portion of the Irish isle.

Northern Irish and Irish folks are actually quite a bit different for two countries so close together. The religious differences are vast.
