well, its in a county in the West of Ireland, but if you mean the food stuff is made up of eggs and oil and maybe a bit of vinegar or mustard. I have no idea which country invented it first, its a very old recipe, maybe someone else might be able to help you there.

But for Mayo the place!! It was always there.

Mayonnaise was a sauce made by a French chef in honour of Irish General MacMahon, who was fighting in the French army, way back when .... It was originally called 'Macmahonnaise', but of course the name changed over the years.

Do you mean the place name Mayo? It is directly from the Irish name Maigh Eo (pronounced mayo) which means "plain of the yew trees".

just for fun, read more at http://www.brits-in-ireland.com/Mayo.htm

Mayonnaise appears to have come from France

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mayonaise

reginaldstower
The Larousse Gastronomique 1961 suggests the explanation: "However logical CarĂªme's justification for the exclusive use of the term magnonaise may seem, we are not by any means convinced that it should take the place of the usual form, mayonnaise. Mayonnaise, in our view, is a popular corruption of moyeunaise, derived from the very old French word moyeu[2], which means yolk of egg. For, when all is said, this sauce is nothing but an emulsion of egg yolks and oil."
