Where is a nice place to live in Republic of Ireland?

Katie (my friend) and I would LOVE to go to Ireland for a year and live there (once we've both graduated). But we have no clue where to start in terms of looking for a place to rent. We think the Republic of Ireland would be good, and all we're looking for is a nice community (preferably near a castle we could explore) and a cheap, yet nice place to rent.

A lot of people are telling you to come to Cork....i live in west cork and don't get me wrong it's very beautiful and i wouldn't live anywhere else but it's very expensive just to warn you. All the villages are lovely but the castles are just ruins that nobody ever bothers with except for the occasional tourist. Start saving now because it will probably be difficult to find a job as you know we are in a recession.
Best of luck to you and hope you enjoy your stay in Ireland.

Orla C, your answer made me burst laughing behind my computer! But ya, absolutely, try another country, cheap it ain't. Rip off Republic again!

Shouldn't your first question be, what do I need to do to legally enter, live and work in the Republic of Ireland? Do you require a visa to live & work in the Republic or can you secure an Irish (or an EU member state) passport through a parent or grandparent?

The Republic is littered with the remains of various fortifications, castles, monasteries & churches. If you can drive & have a good guidebook, you can get about & see a lot. Go to your local library borrow their guidebook on Ireland.

Cheap?? Haha haha haha. Anyway most castles aren't just left there for people to come have a nosey. They are done up and give guided tours, have a gift shop etc. If a castle is just left there it's probably because it's too dangerous to go into. Trim is a nice town with a castle, but I think you'll be seriously bored staying in the one place for a year, travel around, stay in hostels and b&bs.

Cork and the west of Cork are nice but Ireland is not cheap! not anymore. You will enjoy yourselves in Ireland

Aint no where cheap, start saving now.
Look on www.daft.ie for places to rent, i think that would be a priority over which county you lived in, everywhere is just a bus ride away, you can travel the length of the country in a day.

There is only one place to live in Ireland and that is Cork.
You will find the cheap way of living if you want to.
definitly its the place with the most character and area.
Have fun

Cork and Kerry are full of castles. In fact most rural areas are!!! Stay up near Leitrem, Mayo or Donegal. You can cross the border and shop in Northern Ireland, which is much, much cheaper. Check ot www.daft.ie for places to rent.

Hope this helps!!
