I recently hired a car in Dublin and drove to Galway, The Burren, The Cliffs of Moher, Limerick, Killarney, Cork, Killkenny and back to Dublin. Tried to drive along the Ring of Kerry, but had to turn back due to torrential rain (couldn't see a damn thing!) Driving around is easy- traffic is hardly noticable, except in Dublin, and parking was fairly cheap. The roads can be a little daunting, some roads are narrow and big trucks use them... but that just adds to the experience if you have a sense of humour about it; the highways are great. The longest drive I did was 4 hours, which is fine as the scenery is usually beautiful and not boring. I suggest hiring a Sat Nav, makes things so easy. :)

Against all odds!

There's also some nice golf courses in Dublin, too. Plus there's so much history in Dublin -- it's really a great place to go. I'll be heading there in July, but all of my friends that went there said they LOVED Dublin, so you should definitely check it out. Enjoy your trip!

It's Outrageous!

golfing and the coast go hand in hand in galway!

I don't know about golfing, Dublin is already quite an expensive city, so golfing there would be even pricier .... I would not advise having a car in Dublin city itself, if you leave a car unattended anywhere for more than five minutes it's clamped or even removed, and parking costs are horrendous and there are very few legitimate spaces. Use the public transport system.

Otherwise hire a car to drive out to Wicklow, Meath or Kildare, or any of the other neighbouring counties, but to be honest you might just enjoy the sights of the city more. Go to www.discoverireland.ie for more information about Dublin.
