If you want traditional music, I would stray a bit from the city and set my sights on more rural areas around Limerick. Dolans Warehouse, Nancy Blakes...they are great pubs but Dolans cater more for students and can have any variety of music playing: they are well known for alternative bands more so then traditional music. Nancy Blakes is more for the clubbing type- seeing that there is a night club just across the road from it. The Hurlers pub in Castletroy is a nice pub but I'd suggest going to a nice little village such as Adare or Boher and finding a nice quiet pub where, even if they don't have the traditional music playing that night, you are guaranteed to see some of the locals break into song towards the end of the night! Doon is also a great location for traditional pubs, its where I go most times and I would highly recommend that area. Never any trouble there, nice pubs and the locals are amazingly friendly so you will have a great night out there: music or no music!

Actually Limerick is a thriving art city and is full of history dating back to when it was giving the first charter by king john himself. Its full of the best pubs and restaurants and too name a few, here they are.
Dolans on the dock road
george hotel
white house
to be quite honest there are so many you should look up the web for Limerick and also,www.limerickpost.ie

I traveled around western Ireland a couple years ago, and loved the pubs in the small towns. The last night we stayed in Limerick to catch the flight out, and did not enjoy that city.
I don't know why you are going to Limerick, but in my opinion, I'd stay at a smaller town outside there, stay by the castle or something, Limerick is not a great touristy place.
