It does depend what you're looking for in a country. Never been to America or Canada, so cannot comment, but if you like cities then (excluding above) there is nothing like London.
Eastern european countries have a lot of scenery and can be really pleasant places to live, but mentality gets in the way!
Spain is great apart from the Spaniards there! Actually that's not fair, lots of good Spanish friends but it is very corrupt.
Italy can be really nice, I mean really nice. Germany, great. Switzerland is just boring (sorry to say) The French ruin France with their rudeness, but their food must be the best in the world. Belgium is just Belgium, Luxembourg is a mystery city lots of bright flashing lights at night time on bars etc, but--- no people ?? Holland for obvious reasons, Romania great looking girls but.... they'll rip you off! Ireland maybe the friendliest place on earth.
Europe in general is much the same. South America, Venezuela is (was) like a snobby version of Colombia, Colombia is really nice. Actually go to South America, any where and you will want to go again. I am told Canada is a great country especially for work, and the USA, well that is the world isn't it?

1 - There isn't such a thing as the best country on Earth. I'm from Brazil, there's excellent food, you find everything you want on Earth to buy, public transport works and in some things we are like a developed country. Bad points: people get cr** money and there is still hunger, people are horribly under paid and violence rules in big cities.
2 - Ireland is deffo by no means one of the best countries. The food is horrible, (although many things have improved since I'm arrived here in 1998) some basic goods are still hard to find, public transportation and health are worse than in a 3rd world country. Businesses are only open mostly from 0930 to 1730, when everybody else is working too (if you need to have your car serviced, f. ex., you'll need a day off) and people still haven't found out that while they keep on building houses and NOT apartment buildings, property prices will never go down. Good point - depending on what you do, you are normally well paid, and even if you are completely ignorant, never studied, you can be a building worker and get more money than someone who "lost" 5 years studying in college.

Why When How
I don't understand the world's facination with Ireland. We are just a country like everywhere else. A nice country, but we have our own problems.

Also it is my belief that Canada has been seen by UN as the best place to live.

Podge and Rodge Tribute Band
If your name is Bertie Ahern it's a great place to live in. There's people giving him money to beat the band. He's a great man for the "dig outs" so he is.
If you want to come to Ireland, become a farmer or a politician. Sher they'll be throwing money at ya!

No, Ireland iks not but it is one of the best to visit and go back to. Ireland has a relaxing meditative quality but it is a flawed beauty.
No, the best place is Denmark, in fact almost anywhere Scandinavian because it si advanced socially and benefits from wealth and not being too materialistic.
People care for each other and are not stuck in bubbles yet yiou can eat and live well.
The winters are long and cold, but these things are taken account of, not denied like in the UK and Ireland.

SarahJ
I think so!
However Ireland is getting very expensive to live in and is becoming more like other major cities in Europe for example Dublin is a multi national city at present. The people still remain one of the friendliest you're likely to meet though!

munsterman
Yeah ireland is the best( and im not irish) its not as cold as anybody says and it doesnt as much as people say, thats just a stereotype

It depends on your priorities and your age, but if you are in your 20s, looking for a job and a good lifestyle, who wants disposable income in a strong currency to travel, it's definitely one of the best countries in the world!

Mexico.

but I like Northern Ireland- Belfast.

republic of Ireland yes but definitely not Dublin!!I'm saying that cause i have to live there

Damm
I think so! But that's just my opinion.

I also think Canada is pretty great, but I'm biased there too.

I think it all depends what you want in a country. Finland, Sweden, and Norway usually top the UN lists for best country...but people who don't like winter probably wouldn't enjoy them as much.

Nope. Bahamas. Ireland gets too cold.

Orla C
For me personally, it's top ten, but then I too am biased.

I love living here despite the weather, the lack of infrastructure and the sheer ignorance of some of the people.
