Which of these parts of dublin is a nicer place to live in?

if you want to stay close to the city go for Rathmines, Rathgar, Rathfarnham (I used to live there), or on the Northside Drumcondra or Glasnevin.

However, for the rent you suggest you might end up in Santry, but i would not have a problem living in any of the places you mention.

Rathmines is a stone throw away from the city centre. It has loads of young people great places to eat and drink. The new sreise on RTE is set there. Monday 10.50

I've lived in Tallaght, Drumcondra, Artane, Rathmines, Whitehall, and Ballsbridge. The best place for you is definitely Rathmines though or Rathgar, but Rathmines is closer to the city. can walk it in less than 20 mins

It depends what you want, really.
Rathmines is very close to the city centre. You can walk there in about 20-25 minutes. It is quite a respectable neighbourhood, as well as having a sort of hub of its own (pubs, shops and shopping centres, swimming pool). It is quite reasonable to rent in this area, as most of teh houses are divided into flats of diffrent sizes.
Ranelagh is just beside Rathmines, so you will still have access to all the amenities offered there, while having things like shopping centres, late night shops and pubs etc. It might be a little more expensive to live here, but a lovely area. Rathgar is a little farther from the city centre. Not too far to walk, but far enough to make you feel like gatting teh bus. However, it is a beautiful area. It is leafy, quiet, upmarket, and very respectable. You will be able to find dsome flats for reasonable amounts.
Rathfarnham is much further out. It would take about an hour to walk into town. It is a residential area, and although there is a shopping mall there, there are no other amenities close by. It has a wonderful huge park, though, if you are in to jogging.
Santry is even further out of town, and is really a little village in itself. You propbably would not make it into town much if you lived there. Renting will be a bit cheaper there, and you may even be abele to afford to rent a house between you.
I don't really know the area of Glasnevin. Drumcondra is considered to be quite cheap to rent, again, you might be able to find a house to chare between. you.

rathmines is a fabulous location if you can find somewhere there its very close to city but is lovely and peaceful also. Rathfarnham is nice too and very close to Dundrum shoppin centre (a massive shoppin centre... very famous in ireland).
Santry is quite far out but is close to the airport and has good bus service into town (about half hour on bus). it also has a nice shopping centre called Omni (but it is not very big).

Ash, all these places you mention are beautiful to live in.
The problem my love, is the rent you can afford will get you very little, dare I say nothing.
The cost of renting property in or around Dublin is very expensive.
May I suggest you consider house sharing, and even there your talking 4-5 hundred euro a week for the use of a bed-room.
Please what ever you do make sure you have somewhere to live or stay before you decide to make the move.
You will also need to consider the cost of living in Ireland is one of the highest in Europe.

Id say Drumcondra or Santry.
Santry is slightly further from the city centre so it should be a little cheaper, but it would only take 15 mins to get into the city centre on a bus (or max 30 mins during rush hour traffic.) Its also just 10 mins from Dublin Airport... Its a nice place to live... Omni Park shopping centre in Santry has a Tesco, McDonalds and Statoil garage, as well as plenty of clothes shops, some restaurants, and a nice 11 screen Cinema. Also close to good pubs, and only 10-15 euro in taxi to get into the city centre pubs and night clubs...

Rathmines and Glasnevin are the closest to the city centre of those places, which means you'll be paying the most rent there.

glasnevin santry drumcondra will probably be your only choices.......especially the way the doller has fallen in value against the euro. nothing wrong with any of those places......good luck
