U2. Of course there are loads of great bands to have come out or Ireland - Undertones are a big fave of mine, Thin Lizzy, Stiff Little Fingers, Snow Patrol, Ash etc etc

I don't believe it!

The Undertones yes, they're so very good. I also like Ash, certainly their early stuff was good.

Sshhhh! It's Podge and Rodge
Rating
The Blades.
U2 are completely over-rated. Paul Cleary is worth 10 Bonos!
And if you don't believe us listen to these:

Thin Lizzy, Horselips,Undertones, U2 , Frames, Ash, Gary Moore, Rory Gallagher, Stiff Little Fingers.

Not waving but drowning
Thin Lizzy, I saw them in back in 1976 (back when you could still dance at an indoor gig) and was totally blown away.

I also like Snow Patrol (I know they are mainly regarded as a Scottish band, but they are really a Northern Irish band - origination) simply because their sound is unique.

I would not be a fan of U2, I remember seeing them on the Late Late show back back in the late '70's or early 80's (not sure of dates) and was not impressed - but the record company got hold of them, trained Bono to sing better and told the rest of the lads that a variation of the same riff would do on any record produced, well it worked for them. My son taught me to play the basic bass riff and it took me 3 mins to learn it. I had never even picked up my lad's bass guitar before then.

Horslips.
Way ahead of their time. Complete originals and all those that came after them have been influenced by them.

Just check them out on YouTube. Fantastic stuff.

The Undertones.

Fantastic, and much better than the overated U2.

My Bloody Valentine get a mention, but that is all.

Oh, and the Pogues get a mention, albeit for a small selection of good songs.

This is kind of subjective, I don't think I could really name any one band as "the best" so this is just a general list of my favourites:

From the Republic:

Thin Lizzy
JJ72
The Chalets
The Revs
Fight Like Apes
Fionn Regan
Horslips
Damien Rice
Jape
The Cranberries

From the North:

The Undertones
Stiff Little Fingers
Ash
Duke Special

Uh obviously U2, they are still going strong, and get better. and are excellent in concert.

Very tricky question.

However, the Pogues, being actually from London and from what is commonly called London Irish stock, are technically not out of Ireland. That said, Shane McGowan is a great songwriter. And the Undertones, they were CLASS, but technically they were from Northern Ireland, so ..... technically not Irish. And what about the Saw Doctors! Cracking good night out, as are Kila.

I think The Stunning are the best, and I'm also fond of Aslan. Neither of these are very well known outside of Ireland, but such is their popularity at home that they always have well-attended gigs and DON'T NEED the hype that comes with international career.

Where's the Kaboom??

U2 - great back catalogue and keep getting better

Easy. The Rolling Stones. They came out of Ireland on 19 August 2007, having appeared at Slane Castle (Dublin) the night before.

Not alot of rock bands have come out of Ireland but I'd say Steer Clear, they broke up a few weeks ago after being together a few years but still.

Oh and wheres the kaboom- u2 are not in any way associated with rock...thats just offensive to rock itself...ugh
