Actually, many of the natural harbours and ports were started by the Vikings, and later the Normans - the precursors of the Brits, because Britain as a nation did not exist for hundreds of years.
However, the Brits could not have done anything unless they had something to work with.
And while we're on the subject, we in Ireland would like our native forests back, you took them to build London after the great fire, and to build your navy. |

Irish navvies.
And did you know that that word comes from "navigator", because they built canals and channels for ships to navigate along? |

Alexander Nimmo designed some of them and later the Office of Public Works, and of course The Dublin Port and Docks Board made a contribution and indeed the famous Captain Bligh.
Gratten's Parliament voted money for harbours in the 1700's.
The following documentation might help:
Carruthers, Anne-Marie. 'Records of Irish harbour authorities'. Irish Archives, 2:1 (1992), 67-76. Publisher: Irish Society for Archives. ISSN 03324303. |

not that it should matter anyway. it's just history and it's not as if anybody has learnt anything from it except hate and bigotry (see previous posts) |

I am sure they were not ALL built by the British. That is a very silly question. Who built all the motorways in England? And the railways> The Irish? |

The British did, they were very important too them. When Ireland was made the Free State, along with the oath and losing N.Ireland, All the harbours remained under British control and did not change over to Irish hands until the late 30's i believe at the end of the economic war with Britain I believe, but i could be wrong on that one! During WW!, one of the main reasons Britain considered re-invading Ireland was because of the importance of the ports and the fact Ireland would not let the Allies use them. They even suggested an offer of re-negotiating with Ireland over N.Ireland for use of the ports, but Dev said no! Interesting... |

The Vikings built the first ports in Ireland and 90% of the ports/harbours that exist today were originally built by the Vikings (of course they've been developed and upgraded along the way).
The best example of this is Dublin Port, one of the most important on the country |

The eskimos rode across the sea to Ireland on the back of sea turtles and whales. They then proceeded to systematically and carefully build damns around Ireland so the eskimos could ride in their upside down igloos and dock easily. I think I got it all but according to mythology it was due to Homer Simpson and his fearless scallywags. |
