Hi, I'm originally from Bray but left home when I went to university like my my six other siblings did. ( Yes, there are people who go to university form Bray & yes, we do actually obtain PHD's). We all are not on the dole!!
Your question is only going to antagonize people into degrading Bray. I haven't lived in Bray for close on 13 years but my parents still live there. Also I go home every Xmas and I've noticed so many changes over all this time.
Mainly the rise in immigrants and the departure of Bray people by the thousands to Wexford!!!!!
As for using derogative terms, there is always going to be someone who is going to put you down, no matter where you come from. I`ve had many people give me looks when I say I am orginally from Bray though many of them do come form Dublin themselves.
But that is down to their own ignorance!!!
Yes there are people who are unsavory in Bray but that is true world wide. Just look at Limerick and choose any city in the UK to compare. You find people of all types in most towns/ cities in Ireland.
Added to this there is a travelling community in Bray who are probably well known to people who come form Bray ( PYRO´s comments are enough to prove that). I may not have lived there for many years but I know who she´s talking about !!
At the end of the day only you can decide what is correct. I taught in several schools in Bray during the 1990´s both in the private and public ( the worst and best schools according to whom you speak to) sector.
I meet nice, sincere teenagers but also some disilusioned kids who seemed to have given up on life because everyone else had given up on them . That`s normal in any town or city!!
The term "KNACKER" is used far to often by people who are too ingnorant to understand the significance of their comments. But that´s only my opinion!! |

I'm not sure you have the proper meaning of the word. In Ireland, it means a member of the travelling community but it's a slang and not a very nice one, in fact it's considered an insult. if someone in Ireland refers to someone else as a 'knacker' it's an insult usually meaning that they're of a lower class, they have no morals and are usually rascals up to no good ie, spend their time stealing, causing trouble etc. In the UK, I believe it's another word for bast**ds or some such. So maybe when people said that people from Bray are knackers they meant they have no morals, standards etc etc rather than calling them bast**ds as you may have thought. But usually people who say that about other people, haven't a clue. Just for the record, I think people from Bray are sound! |

Wicklow is hardly what id call a "knacker hole" lol.
Most people from Dublin would laugh at you for saying that! Sure, we're "in the country" from their perspective
Not all people from Bray are skangers.....there are a few though
I'm not from Bray, im from Delgany, which is quite close to Bray (15/20 min drive) and theres no knackers here lol
I went to school in Bray and everyone in my school is a legend!
(In fairness, it was a private school, so there wasnt any so-called "knackers" there.....)
But the public schools? Nope....also full of cool people
Its just a stupid view....you'll find knackers in every town in Ireland if you look hard enough |

I live in bray, and i don't consider myself a knacker. I got 515 points in the leaving cert, and am studying at TCD. I don't drink, smoke or do drugs.
PS It is quite insulting to post such a question. |
