hi you
its simple there is a lot of Catholics living here like in the UK there is a lot of the church of England and in Scotland the church the church of Scotland i dont know what the main religion is the the states is but i am sure if you check it out there is a lot of one there two each place you go you will always find that there is one major religion in ireland it happens to be the catholic church

maurice
when henry viii became a protestant, most irish (despite persecution) did not convert.

while most irish today are catholic by birth, they are not all catholic by faith.

Martina L
Because Ireland has always been a Catholic country and that didn't change when the English took it over and introduced the protestant church.

Why are some countries mainly Muslim, some are mainly protestant. We are considered a Catholic country. There are now a lot more different religions here now but I think there are still more Catholics. That doesn't mean they are practicing Catholics though.

Probably stems from it's earliest days, Catholic priests were the main reason religon there converted from Pagens to Catholics. Simply research on the most famous on St. Patrick of course will make this very clear. Besides that...Irish are stubborn and don't jump from one religion to another just cause it's the trendy thing to do..

The reformation failed for a number of reasons.
1: They didn't print the Bible in the vernacular Irish, only in English so Protestantism only developed in the Pale.
2: There were no facilities for training ministers.
There are other reasons but these are the most significant.

Protestantism did not arrive with the British. The British were there long before Henry VIII. The New English planters were Protestant but the Old English were Catholics.

Only Sometimes
That identity is changing in recent years, but when St Patrick converted the Irish, Catholicism was the path they chose. When Britain controlled Ireland, the Catholics had land taken off of them unless they converted to Protestantism (the King created a religion in which he was the equivalent to the Pope and so his people also became Protestant) and because Northern Ireland is British, it is mostly Protestant there and Catholic in the Republic. That isn't to say all Irish are Catholics, I have many friends from the Republic who are Protestant, Buddhist, Presbyterian, and many other religions. Religion is not as important to the youth in Ireland today as it is to the older generations partly because of the diversity of Ireland today and the work/life lifestyles of the Irish today.

Irish Catholics is a term used to describe people of Roman Catholic background who are Irish or of Irish descent.

The Catholicism of Ireland is connected hand-in-glove with Ireland's historic national identity.

To this day, of course, the fighting in Northern Ireland, politically British, is between people divided on two matters — the political (loyalist vs. republican;) and the religious, (Protestant vs. Catholic.)

froggequene
Because no real effort was made during Tudor times to convert ordinary Irish people, those converted were usually aristocracy because to be Protestant was to have access to power.

Meilien
That's southern Ireland. Norther Ireland is Protestant. Britain imported Protestantism there when it took over.

Because they dont think enough about it to see what nonsense it really is. Mugabe is a devoted catholic. Does the pope say anything? Of course not.
