Why are people in the north of ireland so much nicer than those from the south? |
We went to Bangor co down last friday - we got lost on the way. everyone we asked for directions took the time to speak to us and tried to help. it was the way it used to be in Dublin. Why is this? Additional Details the ones we met were not killing anyone they were trying to go about their daily lives like most of us. that was a cheap shot. |

I've been all over the Republic of Ireland and have never met such kind and friendly people. They won't just give you directions, they will take you there. I can't imagine that people in the North are more friendly than those in the South as that would be impossible. |

people are friendly all over, north, east, west or south!! you can't say one part is defiantly more friendly than the next, that's generalising, and usually has little truth in it.
You can be lucky or unlucky with the people you meet, its that simple. I tend to take acts of rudeness or helpfulness as a personal attitude, not a nationalistic one |

its nothing to do with the north and the south, its just that way in all cities and all rural areas. If u go to new york for example im sure people will be hesitant to start talkin to ya, but if u go into the country everyone will be much more friendly....its just cultural differences |

I agree, the people of Northern Ireland are very nice.
You're from Dublin? Well, that answers it. Dublin used to be much friendlier than it is now, I'm sad to say.
A point I would like to make is that the attitude in Dublin does not represent the attitude of the Republic in general. If you are lost in anyplace in the south, west or north-west of Ireland, people will help you there. |

Are you saying that Dublin makes up the whole of the whole of the Republic Of Ireland?
I never was aware of this fact.
Dublin is over populated. People are busy rushing here and there.
It is overpriced.
People are overstressed.
It is very different in atmosphere than the rest of the South.
Come to rural parts of the South, people are very helpful.
Come to some Cities they can also be very nice.
Somebody made a good comment; you cannot base your attitude on a few random experiences.
Non the less, I am from Cork and went to Dublin numerous times.
One time I asked for directions. The Dublin girl walked me 20min out of her way to the train station.
Hmm, this would be hard come across anywhere in the world.
The reason why?
Luck.
If you were to say that the North is so much friendlier than the South then you would have to do a proper survey.
I find people from both parts are very nice.
And also there are jerks and nice people all over the island.
You meet nice people. You can meet nice people anywhere.
Even in other parts of the World where crime is high.
But I dislike Dublin’s atmosphere and do not like the vibe.
But if I went there once and by Luck meet lots of nice people then
I would probably feel different.
Good luck |

This is far too much of a generalisation. |

Probably because they have suffered so much from the IRA terrorists unlike the south who just watched it on TV. |

that is a crock of **** city does not equal rural area, people are "nicer" in rural areas everywhere. |

Because Dublin is a shithole the north is a different situation all together. If your young and out minding your business its np. Different if u want it to be. I find southeners, Irish ppl to be sound. And northerners the same. Jus wudn wanna piss one off, or a skanger. Breed of there own |

That is a generalization, but I do agree with it a little. People in the North seem to have less attitude and less arrogance. Especially towards Americans; they don't buy into the stereotypes and are not rude simply because someone has an American accent. They are very helpful and friendly, even in Belfast, which is a busy place. Most people in the Republic are nice too, but I think they take tourists/visitors for granted and sometimes it shows. Not saying that all people in the republic aren't nice; just judging by personal experiences as a frequent visitor to both Northern Ireland and the Republic.
Big cities are polite and friendly too - the 3 top cities in a politeness poll were New York, Zurich and Toronto. All of which are larger than Dublin.
Edit - I see everyone from Ireland takes even mild criticism really well... |
