Why are the irish government still allowing the ESB to cripple the poor? |
in a bad recession where everything has been badly effected people struggle to make ends meet and ESB prices still spiral out of control because of no competition 300 euro for one simple house bill is extortional from unemployed people that have to suffer a hard recession where everything has gone down in price and value how are the government allowing this and the reason public spending has stopped is because people just cannot afford to live after paying such prices for electricity where will it stop? |

Couldn't agree more - salaries in ESB are astronomical - they have made no effort to be cost effective and the regulator seems to just do what they want. One of the last outposts of the old semi state sector that screwed the nation and somehow they just keep getting away with it.
There is a rumour that Sean Quinn is looking to build / buy a powerstation - hopefully he can and finally put some competition into this market |

Along with ESB, Bord Gais blah blah blah companies, jumping in for another cut of the ordinary joe soap, when the real tradgedy is Ireland, of all countries, have the best natural resources. Wind and rain. Yet, we're importing our fuels?! I couldn't agree more, not just the poor though, its everyone feeling the pinch (obviously minus the millionaires who escaped our ever colourful budget). An ordinary family consisting of two adults, and two children, mortgage, hard fuel, gas/oil, petrol, food, childcare (which is not a recognised payout, i.e. taxable) so once we'ver all this paid, we're left with pennies. Think they should do a re run of Angela's Ashes, 2008 style. |

I completely agree with you its ridiculous that one company has the monopoly on our fuel! |

What we need is to build nuclear power plants around the country so we can get cheap electricity, and for once and for all to stop these knee-jerk reactions against it from the crusty brigade.
We also need to get rid of half the ESB workers who are no different from any other over-bloated, over-unionised public/semi state body. |

Have you any idea the kind of money ESB workers get and the perks!
It's time it was looked in to.
As for Quinn and bringing in competition. That's a decade long job, not an overnight one.The grid is already struggling to cope and is in desperate need of new power plants.
They are reducing their prices 10% said on the telly tonight, yee ha! |

because the government own that company! |

It's not the only supplier of electricity in Ireland. Shop around! A simple household bill is not normally as high as €300. Get a dual tariff meter and it will be cheaper at night and if you stick to it you should see a significant drop in the amount of electricity you use. Also the prices are expected to drop in the new year. If your bi-monthly bill was €200 that means that your electricity would only cost around €25 a week. Considering that electricity is practically used in every household appliance I honestly think that it's not that much. People spend a lot more than €25 on a night out and don't even think about what they are spending.
Try the appliance calculator to see if you can work out what is making your bill so high.
