Crazygirl

Why are there no famous Irish female comedians?

A guy once told me because “women are not funny.”

I don’t agree do.

What do you think?
Additional Details
Like famous, in the sense that they are really well known and the tickets to their show are sold out really fast.

You could extrapolate that question to include the rest of the world.
Apart from Dawn French (who's about as funny as a wet weekend) or Jo Brand there are very few female stand-up comedians we could name.
Anyone could easily rattle off 10 famous male comedians but try naming 10 famous female comedians off the top of your head?
We're not being sexist or mysogynistic or anything, we're just making an observation.

Deirdre O'Kane was, and still is pretty up there with the boys.

Guaranteed Irish!!!
oh bye the way if there are that many famous men comedians its probably cause women write their gags!!!

pauline and deirdre are funny..maybe not internationally but our male comedians moved to england and made their names over there..dara o briain for example. Not too many of them are famous worldwide.

As for other female comediennes - Sarah Silverman, Tina Fey, Jo Brands early stuff, Victoria Woods, Jennifer Saunders (one of the best comedians imo, regardless of gender), Joan Rivers, Dawn French, Catherine Tate, Caroline Aherne, Janeane Garrofalo (spelling?), Roseanne Barr...they arent irish but all those women have made me laugh as much as any male comedian.

A lot of my guy friends dont agree with me, maybe they dont get their humour, but thats their problem really :)

My mam is a comedian!

Edit: No tickets it's just a family show.

Deirdre O'Kane is a scream, and Maureen Potter was also incredibly funny.

There are plenty of them then get up and do their thing at the comedy clubs, but they just aren't internationally famous.

"Women are not funny?!!!" Obviously he never met any of my friends ....

Sarah Silverman and Josie Long aside, I honestly can't think of any decent female comidians from anywhere.

I agree with your friend. Women aren't as funny as men. As much as I hate to admit it, it's true.
