Why do most Irish people support Scottish or English football teams? |
Celtic, Man U, Liverpool, Sunderland etc
If we spent the money we spend on them on Irish teams, the likes of Donegal Celtic would be able to play on a much better stage with much better stadiums - and our local teams would cease to be shite. |

The League of Ireland is fairly decent but the Irish league is pretty poor in my humble opinion. We should forget about the border and have one strong premiership for the whole island with about 14 sides in it. We could have the likes of:
Cork City
Bohemians
Derry City
St Pats
Coleraine
Linfield
Glentoran
Portadown
Shels
etc
It would attract bigger crowds and more money would be poured in to the grounds etc. |

i like the eircom league, im a St Pats girl myself, i love it..theres nothing like freezing snuggled in a pats scarf at a macth some chilly night in october along with the rest of the guys....
i love it :)
i think its pretty hypocritical of some irish supporters of the english teams because they moan and sing songs to do with the IRA Sinn Fein, etc.. and give out about the english....
but they practically live spending thier money in paddy power bettin on all the teams...
eh..i jus love Pats :) |

I honestly dont know why.
They should support their local League of Ireland or Irish League team instead! |

i agree with you. they shouldnt
i live in England but i have always supported my local team (a lower league side who have never progressed above the 3rd tier of the English football league) |

I have no idea! I'm a bohs fan (top of the league) (On points if we'd played the games we missed thanks to the intertoto) and theres nothing like Daylier on a friday/saturday night, singing your heart out in F&G. Love Bohs so much, and love EL soccer. D. Mansaram said the standard is as good as the championship in the UK so it's not the quality. I think its because it's not very well publicised. I know someone who lives 10 mins away from Tolka park (Shels) and didn't even know it was there!!! Its probably publicity |

Interesting question.
The English premier league has the most exciting football and there is so much coverage on the likes of RTE, TV3 etc.
The standard is pretty dismal in Ireland. There are no high-profile players playing for the likes of Shamrock Rovers etc etc therefore no interest, no excitement or TV coverage. But in saying that, we have our GAA which is our home sport as well as a strong force in Irish rugby. We just never excelled in football sadly. Celtic in Scotland has always had a strong Irish support too.
All of our best footballers moved over to English clubs...its where the money, fame and the chance to play against some of the best footballers in the world is. |

let them support who they want
you don't have to support something just because it's irish |

Thats a stupid question
People all over teh world support English teams...
Hell there are people in Japan who support man u....
And supporting teams dosnt make the players better...
And our population isnt big enough for irish soccer to be on a world stage |

I get your point about how if we spent more money on the irish teams then they'd be better, however i think its one of those vicious circles, why pay money to see a team that can barely control the ball, in stadium conditions that are appalling.
I keep an eye on Eircom League, but I support an English team because it always had a bunch of Irish people playing for it when I was young.
It's also to do with airtime... I can't remember really ever watching an eircom league match on the telly.. and if it is on, its not advertised so nobody knows about it. Whereas GAA and Rugby are on all the time, and the Premier League is given massive coverage.
Also, I didn't have a local Eircom League team where I was from, in Offaly, and when I moved to Dublin, I moved around a lot and you just don't get the team spirit you get with your county team in GAA. |

Oh come on, Celtic practically is an Irish team. The stadium flies the tricolour at all times and has successfully resisted sectarian attempts by the Scottish authorities to have it removed.
I believe like Irish embassies, Celtic Park is technically Irish soil ;-)
Totally agree with the English teams though.
How can you support Chelsea when it's full of Loyalist thugs?
Crazy. |
