Ahh you see you asked a question which sparks a rather large debate that is why.... If you read the answers people don't even agree on those. People say the UK and Northern Ireland because they can't be bothered to state the full name or because they believe that Northern Ireland isn't included in the UK which it is! The UK includes Northern Ireland and the official full name is The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland - shortened to the UK but encompassing all four countries. Great Britain is England, Scotland and Wales. So there you go! another answer for you (plus it wasn't a silly question it is one that a lot of people wouldn't know without asking!)

Great Britain is a geographical term which means the larger of the two islands in the British Isles - the one which is made up of England Scotland and Wales.

UK is a political term which includes England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland and the full title is "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland".

Thats why people say "UK and Northern Ireland."

?
It should be " The United Kingdom Of Great Britain & Northern Ireland"

The Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland are two separate countries. The Republic of Ireland includes the 21 southern counties on the island of Ireland, and Northern Ireland is the six northern counties. (Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Derry, and Tyrone)

The United Kingdom includes Northern Ireland, England, Scotland, and Wales. Great Britain is just England, Scotland, and Wales.

They don't - They say "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" because that is what it is.

Rukiya
Wikipedia is good for this though it dsnt explain why its UK and NI and not just UK cos NI is part of the UK!

edd c
I recall from when i was a kid, that britain included northern ireland, but the UK referred only to those that are actually physically united, ie. wales, scotland and england...

What about England and her Allys?

I thought it was some form of guilt.

Like NI is part of the UK but deep down, as modern and learned people, we still have questions and doubts about English past from long ago across the Irish sea.

Greg, you seem to have lost 5 counties somewhere along the way........... Last time i looked, there were 26 counties in the republic............ Anyway, N.Ireland might belong to britian politically, but geographically and in the hearts of it's people, it remains disputed territory,............. ;o)

Flapjack empire
I don't know! I just thought people said 'UK and Ireland' which is different because Southern Ireland isn't part of UK!

Kyral
The UK is the mainland, therefore you get 'the united kingdom of Great Britain and northern ireland (of which the Queen is the Monarch). The Island of Ireland is included in The British Isles but only Northern Ireland is in Great Britain.......................at least I think so lol.
